Some job/career advice…

Hi all,

Yet again I am looking for some further advice regarding jobs and future career options.

I have been at LGW for about 12mths now with a ground handling company. I am currently working on their Ticket Desk, and have previous experience in check-in as well for quite a few airlines (mainly charter ones…!)

Although I am enjoying what I am doing at the moment, I am quite ambitious and would like to get a job that will help me to develop my knowledge and skills.

My ultimate goal in life would be to set-up my own airline, but deep-down I know that this is not going to happen anytime soon (if at all…:( !).

The biggest problem I have now is trying to decide which area of the industry I want to work in. Location is not an issue as I am prepared to re-locate if necessary, but I do not want to make a rash decision and then regret it later on.

If it is of any use, I have graduated from university with a Foundation Degree in Airline and Airport Operations. I decided to leave university after getting this award because I felt that I could learn and achieve more by working in the industry, rather than spending another year in education and further increasing my financial debt, just to be able to get a higher award.

What do you think I should do?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you can deal with passengers and their baggage problems you can do anything! At least thats what I like to think!

HAH, amature. Try dealing with someone that lost a 40ft container! 😉

Dispatch is a good idea. How about scheduling? That is always challenging. Do not know if you would need a degree or industry-experience.

(Yes that’s one of the things I do at work. And no it is not me loosing the damn thing)

My advice would be to do a stint in baggage tracing! It may sound odd but Ive done it and have worked there now for 2 years.

Its a differenet side of the industry and world tracer skills are recognised by every airline in the world. I think its the only system all airlines use except AA and US!

Its also a massive confidence booster.

I think that you should see if there is any places with dispatch. I see that can be quite a hard challenging but at the same fun job

It certainly is. 🙂

If you are looking to develop your knowledge and skills, the logical step would be to work on the ramp with the aircraft. You really will learn a hell of a lot being out there. Ok, so you have to work in all weathers and do shift work (although you are probably doing that already), but you’ll get excellent experience in return.

My company has been considering recruiting a graduate level consultant, but you’d need a full degree.
