Some Kai Tak shots

Still waiting for my photoshop so I thought I would just post thumbnails. I always thought Kai Tak (cramped as it was) had a unique atmosphere. I took some of the shots from the car park and some from the restaurant. The shot of the closeness of the road and housing shows how cramped it was.
I will do a seperate thread of a landing by a B742.

Don Chan

Why resurrect a 2½ year old thread? What you have posted is for flight simulation, we have a dedicated flight sim forum found here. You may be wise to post in there instead.

http://www.flytampa.org/vhhx_iframe.html

Just noticed FlyTampa has a new Hong Kong Kai Tak IAP add-on for FS2004 and FSX-SP2.

http://www.flytampa.org/shots/vhhx5.jpg

Some of the blue, tall buildings in the background, weren’t built before Kai Tak was deactivated.

Also in
http://www.flytampa.org/shots/vhhx1.jpg
the white, turtle-like convention centre on the left, now has an extension built over the closed channel of water between the centre and the coast line.

After the airport terminal buildings in
http://www.flytampa.org/shots/vhhx2.jpg
were demolished, the brown Regal Hotel on the left isn’t called “Airport” Hotel any more.

Trust me. I live within walking distance of the Kai Tak site.
(Guess what’s one of the reasons I’m an aviation fan?)

70 deg right-hand turn at what was it it? 700 or 900ft?

Bum-clenching 🙂

I am not sure – all I know is when I was landing in the Virgin A340 is that it seemed awfully low!!:D

Seeing as they are of wider historical interest, these images are fine where they are. 🙂

Many thanks Grey Area – I will make sure I post in the right section next time.

Landing sequence of an Air Hong Kong B747 approaching Chequerboard Hill and then making the right turn (plus 2 x additional landing shots). Considering the difficulty of the approach, Kai Tak had a good safety record. I can only recall an aircraft running off the end of the runway into the sea (Air China B747??). Although there may have been others. Pictures taken from the top of the airport car park. Sorry for the quality but apart from the fact it was getting dark, my camera was not that great.

1st two pics are coming out of the turn at Chequerboard hill and lining up
(Virgin A340 – G-VAEL). There was a joke about a pax looking into a window from the aircraft and seeing his favourite soap on the TV in the lounge 😀

Mod – I thought I would add the rest of the pics to this thread to keep them all together rather than start a seperate thread in the photos section if thats OK?

AH brings back good memories. 1998, went to Kat Tak on United, and back on Ansett. Landing there and looking out from the window was an experience in itself.

Superb Shots of Kai Tak, back in 1996 i was fortunate enough to be allowed on the flight deck for the landing in to Kai Tak. It’s a memory that wont fade away

Thanks Dan, I would have loved to have been on the flight deck when we were landing. A friend of mine who worked for Air Hanson flew on a Martinair DC.10 into Kai Tak and the captain called him up to the cockpit for the landing and like you he said it was an experience he would never forget.

A few more – the restaurant had some of the nicest grub I have ever tasted.
