Being that I got a new digital camera and flew through four different airports this past week or so, I thought I’d post some of the better images here for you guys that I got at the Wichita, St. Louis, Cincinnati, and Dayton airports. More pics of warplanes can be found in my thread on the AFM board. I won’t embarrass myself by trying to ID all of these (I’m generally pleased I can ID a 747 and tell the difference between the Concorde and Tu-144, civil jets were never my thing), so this is your job! Enjoy.
First up is the plane I flew on from Wichita to St. Louis on the 4th of June.

OK thanks Greekdude. It is rarely noticeable, but it often catches me out on occassions like this!

That Embraer is operated by Chautauqua Airlines and is noticably different from the mainstay American Airlines feeder, American Eagle, by the fact that this one is named as American Connection as well as the symbol on the rudder is completely blue where as American Eagle has it painted red and blue. Chautauqua operates the EMB-145’s, while American Eagle operates the EMB-135/140/145’s.
So using the airline fleet types to ID this aircraft it has to be a 145 as it’s operated by Chautauqua. If you are a window counter, the 135 has 4 windows behind the emergency exit, the 140 has 5 and the 145 has 6 windows.
This might be wwaaayyyy more information than you wanted but I had to share it. :);)

I though United were getting rid of their Jetstreams?
This Junkstream is operated by ACA, Atlantic Coast Airlines, out of Washington Dulles. They still operate the J41’s for now but that could change in the next few months as their agreement with United is finalized. ACA parked their J32’s about a year and a half ago

Sorry, I was not aware of the colourblindness. The top part is actually grey.
By: Mark L - 14th June 2003 at 19:26
They’re not? The top part of the fuselage looks green to me, but as I think I mentioned a little while back I am actualy slightly colour blind!
By: greekdude1 - 14th June 2003 at 19:11
The United colours aren’t Green, Mark.
By: Mark L - 13th June 2003 at 10:02
Yeah, it just looks a bit odd in Green when I have only ever seen them in white, thats all.
By: greekdude1 - 13th June 2003 at 03:54
Doesn’t look weird to me! I fly on United Express all the time! Mostly on EMB-120’s but also on the aforementioned J41 as well as the J31 and the Beech1900D. I can’t forget about the CRJ either.

yeaaaaaaaaaaa! Jetstreams – i love these esp the 41 – give some over here they can put on some runs for LBA – hows about Bristol and Gatwick again – stansted would be good too – hail hail the J41!!

Glad you guys like the pictures. As Ren said, the “great photographers with great gear” idea is a bit irritating, the most important thing regardless of what you spent on your camera is your technique and your ability to find a good shot. Yeah, more $ will get you “better” gear, but if you don’t have a clue as to what you’re doing with it you will still probably end up with crappy pictures. My camera was a little more pricey because I wanted a for-real zoom lens, but it was a far cry from what some pros spend on theirs, and I am perfectly happy with the results I got. I will say that for really good shots, you have to get a tripod. Helped me out alot with some of the zoom work I did at Wright Patterson. Cheap ones like mine run around 30$ U.S. and it was collapsible, fitting right inside my checked suitcase.
Here’s another one I got, June 11th on the way back to Kansas, at the Dayton Airport in Ohio.

I’m getting the feeling an aviation photography Q+A session would go down well on here ? There’s lot’s of budding snappers on here now and we don’t mind the strict “experts only ” approach of the big sites like A.net and the like.
I enjoy taking plane pics, but I kind of get fed up with the notion that you have to be a “great photographer with great gear'” attitude the main sites take, no offence to the guys on here that produce those wonderful shots we all appreciate. I also enjoy seeing plane pics, taken by real plane admirers, no matter what the style, weather, light, framing, quality etc.
Every picture tells a story, as long as there’s a discernible aircraft in the frame then let’s see ’em ! I particularly enjoy the pictures on here that attach to a story or report about the flight(s) they relate to.
Let’s see more of them folks. Comments please ?
🙂

theplane-I used Microsoft Photo Editor. The actual images were all over 1MB in size and rather huge (over 2000X1000). I cropped the images using MPE, then resized them to 50% of original size. I actually got Photoshop myself this past week as well, but haven’t really played around with it too much. Photo Editor is perfectly fine for what I needed to do.

It is indeed theplane (102.4kb)
More great shots, so good to see the work of the forum members, so much talent!
By: theplane - 12th June 2003 at 12:07
hey soc…..what program did u use to crop, the images?? i’ve been trying to upload mine, but they all look like crap…..grrr…..and i just downloaded photoshop 7 on robc’s advice, but there are just too many buttons in that program 😀
anyways, my main problem is getting the pictures down to 102400 bytes (that is 100kb right??), and holding the quality together

yep the third a/c is actually on lease from Spains Futura charter airline with the additional titles on, it’ll probably be coming home soon for the summer rush! – Like the Embraer – looks a little long for the 135 so either 140 or 145 – would guess at 145!
