Some scanned old prints from LBA

A selection of scanned prints from the 80’s and maybe 90’s as well – excuse the quality, they’re scanned off 4X6 prints, hope they re-kindle a few memories for some of the older contributors, and show younger viewers what we’re missing these days!

Great images man….When I was a Traffic Officer at STN back in the 80s I used to ramp the Balkan Tu154s none of the other T/Os were that keen to do them or any other of our Eastern Bloc visitors come to that….bet they would now:) We used to get the Odyssey 757 twice a week along with the Worldways types though usually the DC8s. Loved working the JAT flights, usually DC9s at STN and Aviogenex Tu134 and 727-200, we did not see the 737 very often. Thanx for posting them!

Skudupnorth I remember been able to walk out over the piers,i was there the day it closed some idiots throwing things at planes!!!
These old pics bring back great memories especially the Jat,Aviogenex,Dan-Air and Britannia 732.I loved it when Manchester used to thunder with these old jets.I will try to scan some of my old prints and get them on here i got some old memories Caledonian 1-11,Cal-air dc-10 etc.

Thanks for sharing these mate

Yes they were good days to watch everything landing at the pier ends,i think the rot set in when they fenced off the ends then it was down hill from then on and off to the brickworks (now runway 2 for you youngsters ! )for good take off and landing views.Must get my scanning head on and share stuff !

WOW! Its great to see what LBA was like! I can’t believe how different the Terminal is!
It looks like one massive fire station! I take it aircraft didn’t park where the bmi/eastern RJ’s park now on stands 1-6? Did they park further down near the short stay car park?

Thanks for your comments EGPH, it’s nice to know the postings are appreciated. The Adria A320 YU-AOA was delivered new in May 1989 so I’m guessing I took the photo that same summer.

The hostilities curtailed the services from 1991, although I understand Jet2 are putting back Dubrovnik onto the Leeds destinations list from summer 2009.

Some very good shots, I always like to see the airline colour schemes from years ago. The A320 makes it feel very modern though, I just can’t think of the A320 as a plane that was around in the 80s!!! Even now it seems so modern

WOOOOOOOOW ace collection, thanks for sharing. I flew on one of the Dan Air 1-11 from Manchester to Mahon the day after the Airtours disaster, complete with patchwork quilt wings and feeling all so thankfull when i got off it on the apron at Mahon. Loved it, aviation caught me after that flight.:)

LBA is my humble little home airport but I’ve only really been spending time up there since 2005, so to see these old images is absolutely fantastic. Thankyou for sharing them with us. 707’s at LBA… I’d have loved to have seen that!

Thanks again. 🙂

Ah silly me,but Trident’s diverted to LTN if it was too bad.

Good stuff and fond memories re-kindled,makes you wish you had taken more notice of even the common aircraft of that time like original 737’s and 727’s.Love the DC-8,we used to call them “tubes” when we were spotting on the terraces at Manchester……who remembers being able to go to the end of all the piers ????

Sadly never saw any at LBA, which was about as far as I travelled in those days, did we ever get any? I can remember massive numbers of BA 111’s and 732’s when the fog took hold everywhere else sometimes, but presume the Tridents got in at MAN or BHX on their autoland
