Some Shackleton TLC – Duxford 22 Jul 07

A quick trip to DX this morning and the Shackleton is in the restoration area of AirSpace and the TFCs ‘Twilight Tear’ is in the process of being stripped down for its sea voyage to the USA. The stage from the Flying Proms was being dismantled and the Huey, JP and Yaks had obviously stayed over night after the show.

The time for both airframes (Shack & Victor) to have some TLC was long overdue so it’s nice to see something happening at last. I too hope she doesn’t lose her wings.

i spoke to a member of the conservation staff whilst at legends regarding the shackleton and he said that the aircraft was to be surveyed to determine exactly what was required to bring it up to display standard and as part of this process the outer wings would have to be remove so that it would fit into the conservation hangar (5) so all this wild speculation is for nought me thinks,

Was ‘Brooklyn Bum’ back?……Ed Shipley had to do a precautionary landing into Brize coming back from Fairford last Monday.

No the P-39 is still there, and it was Sunday, not monday.

Clipped wings

There was a drawing of the hangar showing the shack as a fuselage only. God I hope this is not true as she will be the only one of her variant that will have a roof over her head in this country. You can still make it a walkthrough just have to build accessto the crew door and nose

Was’nt there a plan to make the “Shack ” a walk through . ? You get a great view of size of the wing span when parked next to the Victor in these shots..

I too am a little concerned that the Shack may “lose it’s wings”. Looking at the photographs there appears to be a cordless drill on the wing. It may be coincidence, but it’s next to the access panel for the outer wing bolts. The only other items below that panel are the taxy and landing lamps. Maybe the intention is to refurb the wings off the frame. That’s OK, as long as they go back on.

About time too, too (Shackleton and Victor). My only concern are rumours that the Shackleton will loose its wings.

I echo the sentiments about the Shackleton, good to see it……and the Victor, getting some long overdue TLC.

Nice pics there.

It is about time they did something with the Shack as it looks tired and worn and unloved on the flightline.

Still fingers crossed she will get more than just a touch up (same for the Victor too).
