Hi,
I was at the airport pub [hotel] outside at MAN watching the aircraft and I saw a 4-propeller prop plane very smokey,it came right over the pub [normally come infront of u] and turned to the runway and flew off again and never came back, does anyone know what it was, here is what I remember about the plane:
4 smokey propellers
String[or whatever material] atached from tail to the top of body.
It wasn’t a Hercules!

My thoughts were either an Atlantic Airlines Electra or even an Air Atlantique DC-6?

The Dash-7 is really not that big a plane.

Lockheed Electra/Orion?

nop,they’re both 2 big!
I’m starting to think it could have been an air atlantiqe one of their old planes?!?!?

And this could be a possible result of the crap-generating engines.

That propably was an African Antonov 10 or 12 or other variants. These are very smokey! The string is actually an antenna for better radio contact over remote areas with limited radio capability. The Dash 7 is efficient! It can’t have a smoke! The Dash 7 is very, very complicated regarding the engines.
This Antonov AN12 is taking off from Ostend.

Try to dig up a picture of an EC-130 “Compass Call?”, or something like that. The communications jammer. Full of “strings” on the tail. Was based in Germany. Now Davis Monthan? (Yes, I know it is a Hercules – it smokes too!)
Best regards
