Something to do in Glasgow apart from GLA

Any of the local lads or indeed from elsewhere, may wish to take in the only UK showing of the ‘Airworld’ design exhibition currently running at Glasgow’s Tramway theatre. It’s free and runs until May end.

Looks quite good…

“The amazing evolution of the aeroplane in the past century surpasses the development of any other means of transportation. Prominent designers have created new logos, cabin interiors, tableware for onboard service and uniforms – developing in the process some of the very first comprehensive corporate identities. Christian Dior and Cristobal Balenciaga made new clothes for the stewardesses of Air France; Giorgio Armani provided fine apparel for Alitalia’s flight attendants, while Oleg Cassini, Pierre Balmain and Valentino came up with exclusive creations for TWA. Successful airport architecture, as the point of departure and arrival for every trip by air, is also capable of evoking – or even enhancing – the pleasure of flying. Eero Saarinen’s organically shaped terminal of poured concrete for TWA at JFK Airport in New York, or Vilhelm Lauritzen’s elegant, glazed airport facility in Copenhagen are just two outstanding examples.

With a large selection of objects, ranging from elegant uniforms to functional onboard tableware; from travel posters by well-known graphic designers to replicated cabin interiors and models of aircraft and airports – this exhibition celebrates the aesthetics of air travel from a time when it still possessed the special aura of the extraordinary, to current times when flying is a way of life.

Another travel tip if you want to get there and don’t want ripped off by the airport cabbies, is to phone a local Paisley cab firm who will pick you up at the entrance to the airport Holiday Inn hotel (big multi storey hotel opposite terminal’s international arrivals.)

Take a cab to Paisley Gilmour Street station (two mins and less than a fiver by cab) Buy a ticket straight to Pollokshields East, and change at Glasgow Central.

Its about 5mins south of the City Centre, say about 20mins from Glasgow International Airport.

If you drive there direct I’d say 20 mins, yes.

Sounds rather interesting.

Is this place easily accessible from Glasgow airport?

Er kind of… As GLA is really in Paisley and not Glasgow, you need to get into the city first, by bus or taxi. Ideally you want to get to Central Station and then get a local train to Pollokshields East station (5-10 mins) or take the tube to Shields Road subway station. From either of these you can walk to The Tramway quite quickly. A taxi from GLA or Central Station is another option I suppose…

Buses from Central Station on Union Street and Jamaica Street will get you to the corner of Albert Drive in around ten mins or so from the city centre…

Bus: From Jamaica Street to Pollokshaws Road at the junction with Albert Drive, numbers 22, 23, 29, 38, 38A, 47A, 45, 57.
