Just to let you all know that South African are changing their colours this year. They are considering two options. The tail will remain the same but the bottom half of the plane will have blue through it. Looks very smart. and i cant remember hat the other one was as it wasnt up to much. They are also looking at replacing their complete 747-200-300-400 fleet with either the Boeing 777 or the A340. Seen both of them a JHB just before I left to come home.

RE: South African Airways
I know they looked quite cool with the winglets. I thought they were just replacing the long haul fleet all the 747s. But I guess Airbus must be giving them a great deal and I know what ever way they went it would have to last them about 15years. Wonder if the new aircraft will have the new colour scheme.

RE: South African Airways
It seems a bit stupid and a waste of money that SAA are replacing their 737-800’s with Airbus A320’S and A319’s as the 737-800’s were supposed to be a replacement for SAA’s previous Airbus A320’s.

RE: South African Airways
Thats a pity. Personally I prefer the 777 more room on board. Any idea when they are taking delivery of their first one. Looks like the end of Boeing then in SAA.

RE: South African Airways
They’ve gone for Airbus. They are getting the A340-600 and the new -300 with slightly more efficient engines. They are also using Airbus for their shorthaul fleet, the 737-800’s will be replaced starting in about 2010.

I quite like their current livery – and it isn’t all that old either. Still, I’m sure the new colours will turn out to be nice. The African carriers seem to sport some fantastic liveries – Just look at little old Nationwide!

RE: South African Airways
How about this:
Replace 737-800 with A320’s
747SP with A340-300’s
747-200/300/400 with A340-600’s
Benefit from the commonality of the Airbuses.

RE: South African Airways
Sorry 747Sp is also going to be getting replaced. This is due to the high running & maintenanc costs.

RE: South African Airways
It has been brought up in the forum very recently how nice SAA’s colours are. The plans of keeping the tail would, I think, be a good idea!
Is’nt it stange how a lot of the airlines seem to be considoring or actually changing their colour schemes at the moment? KLM , AIH, MON, BY, SAA, Delta etc…. perhaps a fresh change for the new century!

RE: South African Airways
Do you know what their plans are for the 747 SP fleet?
I remember a rumour or possibly a story some time back that their 737-800 fleet would be replaced by A320s. Seems wierd, as the 737s actually replaced A320s in the first place.
