Took a rare trip back to my old stomping grounds this month and drove past the old RAF station at South Cerney. I noticed the JAMC has now taken over the barracks side of things and there’s a big high wire fence separating the airfield part itself from the buildings.
I was rather shocked at the state of the airfield itself. The perimeter track is starting to break up and covered in weeds in some parts and the grass on the “infield” is up to armpit height.
While it hasn’t been an active airfield for years I still remember the grass being cut and the odd glider launch and practice cargo drops from Hercs before I left the local area about 9 years ago.
What’s the airfields current status? Has it been totally mothballed and put out to pasture (no pun intended)? Shame to see another one of the local RAF airfields I remember from my “yoof” slowly rotting away. 🙁
