Yes, the sister of a chap I work with now and again said they wanted to run it. What a great shame to close a business
which ran at a profit. Just because it didn’t fit in with their plans.

I believe the Lancaster is also on borrowed time, as they will eventually want to extend the car parking.
Along with shifting the Vulcan.

Where do the aircraft spotters go now ?

Old airport Cafe , Alas yes the airport decided to shut it as its not core business even though its was make money, somebody did try and try it on but run it to bureaucracy. The Lancaster restaurant by the Vulcan is still open and serve good food…

Does anyone know if the cafe in the old terminal is still open ?
Drove past yesterday and it looked as if it were closed, it would be a great shame if that’s true as it was always busy.
They also seem to have done something with the adjacent car park, no free parking any more ?

I can answer this one myself:

Had to go into Southend earlier so made a diversion to the Airport.
The cafe closed in May, and the carpark looks as though it can only be accessed via the Hotel entrance.
Maybe for those staying at the hotel, and flying out.

Great shame about the cafe, it was very popular and always busy.

I assume the Lancaster club is still open ?

Of all easyjet’s airports Southend is favourite for passenger satisfaction.

Southend Airport are offering free car parking for January & February in one of their car parks if you pre-book, it has not gone down too well with some of the Anti-Southend Airport people!

I got banned from the Echo website before Christmas, but am back on again now with a different user name.
Mustn’t mention anything to do with Savile or our traveller “friends” 😀

Anything to do with the airport does stir up a hornet’s nest.

Do these protesters have any shred of credibility left? It would seem that the demand is there.

and the protesters said all house prices would drop, some are saying they have lost £150,000 off the value of their homes so if you want a bargan and a fantastic view of the comings and goings from Southend Airport…

You may have already seen it, but I was at Southend museum Friday
evening, and bought what looks like a good book.

RAF Southend 1940-1944. by Peter Brown

It gives a day to day accounts of events involving the airfield.

Somebody has made the wild claim that a planning application has been submitted to build a second runway at Southend!

However they refuse to provide any link and there is nothing on the SBC or RDC websites, and anyone who knows the area will know that there is no room for a second runway.

There is the old cross runway but Warners Bridge and the retail estate prevent that from being used again.

Normal comments from the antis the story about the International airport connected to Southend Pier made me laugh as somebody pointed out, the pier was longer than the runways!

Work underway at Southend Airport terminal

3:18pm Friday 9th November 2012 in Local News

Building work for Southend Airport terminal extension
WORK is underway on the £10million expansion of Southend Airport’s terminal to cater for the growing number of passengers.

The work is for a new arrivals facility and this is scheduled to be ready at the end of May 2013.

The terminal opened in February and already large numbers of passengers flying to and from Southend mean an extension is needed.

The building will become 90 metres longer with more check in desks / baggage drop off points.

Airport security and the Departure Lounge will also be made bigger to enhance the experience for passengers awaiting boarding after security.

Retail and catering facilities will be expanded throughout the terminal in order to provide a much wider range of shops and services available to passengers.

The final phase will be completed just before Christmas 2013.

The expansion will create an extra 300 jobs such as passenger service, security, retail, catering, baggage handling, engineering and maintenance, plus airline crew from London Southend based airline operations.

London Southend Airport Managing Director Alastair Welch said: “Our aim is to ensure that we deliver a very special level of customer service in Southend and this extension will allow us to ensure we can continue to deliver those high standards as the airport grows. This is also further evidence of the role the redeveloped airport is playing in supporting the regeneration of the wider Essex economy.”
