Southend to expand

http://www.airliners.net/discussions/general_aviation/read.main/1812399/

Also just read an unrelated article today that they are to focus on regional airlines for new routes – wish them well

For those of you that don’t know SEN:

Lots of maintenance/aircraft painting work

Pleased to hear the church doesn’t have to be moved but the airport can still stay open

On local TV at the weekend the parishioners of the church were shown celebrating because the church would not be moved after all. In Southend’s original proposals it was either move the church, realign the runway or shorten the runway. The third option would they said mean that large aircraft couldn’t land there and the maintenance firms would leave probably leading to the airport’s closure. Presumably it means that the runway will be realigned? This was the proposed plans.

Perhaps it would be a good place for flybe – DUB/BHD/EDI/GLA/JER on Dash Q-400 and ALC/AGP/MJV/PMI on Bae 146-300, may be some french routes as well. Or even just a few charter flights in the summer or some Transun special departures/day trips

SEN will always be dogged by its Short Runway with Church and trainlines at the ends! I seem to remember an EAC B732 having problems this summer due it tanking fuel for a return flight to Cardiff and then onto BOH, that means evenm the likes of Ryanair would struggle with a Dublin run!

Too much competition nearby too I think with the City and STN is such close proximity, however it is VLMs diversion airport when LCY is shut, that probably accounts for a fair percentage of the Airports passenger numbers!
