These are photos from the late 1970s and early 1980s. They represent the final years of the Soviet jet airliners, I think. won’t write a frontspiece because you guys who will be looking at this thread know more than I do about these aeroplanes. 🙂
There is even an Interflug IL-62M for ‘InterflugIL62M’!

Very nice pics. IMO, the Il18 was always a ‘looker’:)

very, very nice pictures. I thought those Egyptian IL62’s were a highpoint but that Egyptair IL18 is better still! Also love the Yugoslav.

It feels more appropriate to put these Il-18s in with the Soviet Jets

Great shots. I’m biased, and I don’t care. The Il62 looks good in any livery, yes, even Tarom:D

Balkan inflight service at it’s best! When I was working their STN flights, they always offered the traffic officer and the ramp guys a coffee each, or the famous ‘orange’. I loved that orange juice, but even nicer was the thick apple drink. In fact, it was more like a light puree. I got hooked on it, and in exchange for an English newspaper, I would be given my own carton. These days, the company that made it, probably makes 7Up! Ah well, that’s progress ……isn’t it?

remember when AirEurope went bust, my old folks went to Cyprus that summer, the flights were taken over by Balken, (think it gave them idea for Balken Holidays airline)
anyhow after boarding the Blaken TU-154 at Cyprus 2 passengers were still standing with no seats!!!! a delay ensured
when the hostess passed my dad with the trolley he asked for a G&T and was met with the response, No orange juice or coffee!!!!!!!

Always considered the TU-134 to be a “sexy” looking sleek airliner… have to find the picture now.
I’ll go along with that (especially in Interflug colours). The rate of climb with them, even heavily loaded, was amazing, a real ‘pushed into the seat back’ ride on take off!

I usually just browse these areas, but this thread is priceless!
Pity I “missed” the more interesting days of aviation when things were a lot simpler.
The only “cold war” era airliner i have seen in the flesh was a TU-134 which visited Australia on a charter back around 1990s? It was a eastern bloc orchestra I think….

Kaman made a very similar looking helicopter, known as the ‘Huskie’.
http://www.military-aircraft.org.uk/helicopters/kaman-hh-43-huskie.htm
Note that the twin rotors on the Huskie, are twin intermeshing types.

Ah, thanks for that needed info, IL62M! ‘Kaman’ is probably an old USA helicopter maker then!
This aircraft was in great condition and looks great in the markings of Interflug. I wondered about if the registration DDR-SPY might have significance, in the way the UK registers police and air ambulance helicopters with acronyms to reflect the operator.

Hi Sarah, The Ka26 in your pic was made by the Kamov helicopter enterprise, founded by Nikolai Kamov, in the then Soviet Union. His enterprise was responsible for producing mainly military craft featuring his trademark central twin axial rotor principle. I have seen this actual Ka26 in many pics operating within the old DDR. Interflug operated the type in many roles, including air ambulance and arial survey duties. Some of these machines were also operated by the Volkspolizei (Peoples Police), in the old DDR, and I would assume that this example will, at some time, have been flown by them. I always thought that the registration was very appropriate!

Some great shots all round. I may very well be in the minority here, but I think that the Tu144 knocked spots of the Concorde for looks, especially in ‘nose up’ pose. Nicest eastern bloc livery? why, Interflug of course;)
Hey, IL62M…
Here is an Interflug aircraft I saw in a helicopter museum near Western Super Mare…
It has KA-26 on the side so I guess that means Kaman?
It is a nice livery too, white, red and cream grey.

Can someone tell me its significance on latest Antonov civil jet planes

This was the last Tu134 i saw. It was at the RAF Valley airshow in the mid 1990s. I guess the days of this graceful aircraft are coming to an end. Shame. As the first aircraft I ever flew on I have a soft sopt for them.
