Soviet missiles on western aircraft (and vice versa!)

iv found mention of Soviet R.60 (AA.8 Aphid) missiles being used on Finnish aircraft types such as the BAe. Hawk and Saab Draken? does anyone know of any further details of such fitment (i presume a trials installation?)

a counter example iv found is one of the original USAF. flown MiG.21F fitted with Sidewinder captive round for acm.

many thanks, cheers, Joe Cherrie

I’m surprised we haven’t seen the MiG 21 LanceR on this thread yet. Here is one firing a Magic.

This is the well known egyptian Mig-21MF with AIM-9Ps and an ECM pod almost certainly italian made ( Elettronica ELT-555?)

Does anyone know more about this upgrade ? When did it really took place ? What avionics upgrades did it involved ? New HUD, radar , RWR ? I’ve seen enough egyptian Mig-21 pics taken relatevly recently , and there is not a single recognizable upgrade element…not on the outside at least …

Any infos would be greatly apreciated, thanks.

After 1973 … Egyptians initiated a relatively modest “Westernization” update of their MiG-21 fleet, performed by British Aerospace and Rolls-Royce. The update was mostly an avionics fix, involving fit of a GEC-Marconi HUD, Teledyne navigation and IFF units, and Tracor AN/ALE-40 chaff-flare dispensers. Egyptian MiG-21s also learned to carry Western weapons, such as Sidewinder AAMs.

Some time in the nineties, Russia was in need of cash, while the US Navy was concerned about the spread of the latest ex-soviet antiship missiles in potential rogue states, like China. Not being able to simulate the capabilities of those latest missiles, they offered the Russian to buy a few, and surprisingly they accepted. I had read a report stating a buy of up to 100 missiles. The idea was “If you can’t simulate the threat, buy the threat”.

In this pic, the crew is an American high ranking naval officer as pilot, while the RWO is a Russian officer. The Phantom however is a QF-4…

I undigged the official press release by then McDonnel Douglas:

…”The success of this test flight proves that a Russian missile can be easily and successfully modified for use in the United States as a nonlethal target,” said John Reilly, McDonnell Douglas MA-31 program manager. “Our team worked long and hard to prove to the world that Russian American military-industrial cooperation is a reality in the post-Cold War era. :D:D:D Now we are hoping to build on this foundation.”…

i think i might be mistaken in my first post re the mention of alternate missiles on the Draken?, iv checked through the excellent Jyrki Laukkanen book on the Draken in Finnish service and another Swedish volume on the type neither of which mention anything other than the missiles usually seen on the type

the source re an alternate missile does seem to have gathered form tho, the recent Finnish release of a 72 scale model of the type mentions it in its instruction booklet too!

cheers, Joe

I have read (osprey Israeli Mirage III and Nesher aces) that the Mirage III wasa armed with some captured ex-egyptian R-3 (AA-2 Atoll) at the end of the Six days war. And at least were six calibration shots… but unfortunately I never seen a photograph of those

On the other hand, the Russian / South African Mirage F.1 upgrade also involved integrating the R-73.
