A source of mine who seems to be in the know of arrivals at Manston, told me today that on Thursday, a IL-96 cargo is coming in. Its apparently one of only 5 special heavy lift cargo variants in existence, and its coming in to pick up something big and they are bringing their own crew in to move whatever it is, with Manston’s staff not being allowed to touch it, so there is some degree of secrecy surrounding it. I’ve also been told its carrying “CCCP” markings, so its most likely going to be an Aeroflot jet.
Anybody else heard anything about this?

No not sure, i’ll see him tomorrow, so i’ll find out.
Anyone know the timings for the 124?
Oh, my bad, i just noticed the timings, thanks 225hvy, am i correct in saying its arriving at 0700 hrs and departing at 0830?
I’m not completely kosher with all the airport code terms :S
Just recieved some new information, The An-124 is coming in on sunday evening at 6:30pm, and its departing on Monday morning, and the Il-96 is coming in Thursday at 3:30pm, not sure on departure date. Apparently the 124 is picking up a Cummins generator, but what the IL-96T is picking up is hushed up. Not jumping to conclusions, but Polet airlines operate both IL-96’s and 124’s, so could possibly be there? My source works at Manston, so its kosher information.

What is the significance of this on a historic aviation forum?
Am I missing something here?
As significant as someone saying they’ve just spotted a Chinook on the “Spotted” thread.
Additionally, you may want to tell whoever posted this thread the same thing –

The arrival of a plane which is historically documented as one of the largest planes ever built, landing at a historic airfield is fairly relevent to this forum, if it offends you, then you don’t have to look at it?
No disrespect to you of course, if I’ve posted in the wrong area, i apologise, I’m a fairly new user.
C’mon, we’re all aviation lovers right? 😀

Do let us know if you find out: a correct in-period 513th or 514th FIS scheme would look nice – especially if it’s in natural metal rather than silver-painted.

In response to the above two posts, the plan (according to the guys who work there) is that the ‘Star will be overhauled and displayed in her original operational scheme – “original silver”, to quote. Whether that means bare metal or re-painted entirely, I don’t know. Didn’t have a chance to ask as the museum had closed (they kindly allowed me in after 4pm to photograph the T-33) 😀

went to the manston history museum on saturday, nice to have a new exhibit, the silver star looks good, but as has been said another scheme would be nicer! Feel sad for the whirlwind and jaguar outside.

It will, I’ve had words with the people who control it.
As an aside for people who may be visiting Manston over the weekend – and to add another historical element to this thread – the T33 that was based for many years at North Weald has finally arrived and has been reassembled, now on display in the History Museum. Had a look at it last weekend, looks a little worn, but still nice. Should look even better once she’s back in her original silver scheme. 😀
‘Original’ ‘Silver’ Pray tell….
