Unlike in Spain, in the UK, the access to planes to all spotters is relatively easy in Britain. Iam going to be in LDL, MAN, EDI and Glasgow from the 1st to the 5th of february,
Could you tell me, is there are spectators terraces in these airports?, How easy is taking photos?, I am specially interested in EDI?.

RE: spectators areas in the UK airports.
I think it´s great. Theres a nice spectators area on top of terminal two. SO without a zoom one is able to get good shots at the european airlines parking there. One has a nice view to one of the runways but you need a zoom to get good photos. On the other way, there´s a aviation shop, coffee shop and other facilities. Getting off at Hatton Cross (the last tube stop before arriving at LHR) and walking a bit one gets nice photos of the incoming planes.

Don’t know what LHR is like these days, but I always used to watch aircraft from the top of the multi storey car parks that are between terminals 1, 2 and 3. The last time I did this was in 1994 though, so I’m not sure if airport security has clamped down on car park spotters. I got some good shots of aircraft from those car parks as the view of aircraft departing from both main runways was good.

RE: spectators areas in the UK airports.
trains to airports in Scotland? you must be joking! The only Airport in Scotland with a train station is Prestwick (Glasgow Central-Ayr line). Otherwise, there is a bus service from Paisley Gilmour Street train station to GLA, also accesible from Glasgow Central. There are frequent Buses from Edinburgh City Centre to EDI.
Having said all that, Don’t expect Scotrail to be on time… I speak from experience… Have a great time, anyway!

…At Manchester you used to be able to get right to the end of the T1 terminal piers but they stopped that years ago due to possible terrorist/FOD throwing bufoon activity. It is still quite good at Manchester for observation though. I don’t know how it’s going to work with the new runway however as they are going to use one for taking off and one for landing. If they use the new one for taking off it will cause considerable problems as there is no way to get close to the new runway area for observation purposes. If you need anymore information Keltic, please e-mail me and I’ll send you some maps of wher to go e.t.c.
Paul.
P.S: Like LHR (don’t know about the others) you can get the train direct to Manchester Airport too, so it’s really accessible….

RE: spectators areas in the UK airports.
Thanks guys. So I suppone there´s not any open terrace like in LHR or LGW in any of these airports, isn´t it?. Since I don´t have a car, I´ll try at Glasgow, at the top bar, and I´ll have a look.

I live in glasgow and travelled from edi last sep going to alicante and the whole airport is having a major facelift but contact www.baa.co.uk click on edi that will tell you what is still happeding at the airport they used to have a bal you could stand on but think that they done away with this not as good as gla airport and if you going to gla if you driving go behand the airport as that is where all the spotter go as you get about 100m away from the runway if you would like directions let me know also preswick airport has a great spotter’s bit also free parking but not that busy but still try it most flights are with ryanair from preswick but last time i went to edi about two years ago to spot it was great because you had the walkway but do not think they that now glasow airport you have to go to the top bar not good for photo’s so that is why i use the back because depands on which way they are coming in or taking off you can get some good photos at the back plus doesn’t cost you parking if you are taking your car back have a good one and let me know what you think of my local airport have fun and if you would like me to tell you about the great photo’s for glasgow airport leave a message at i will tell you enjoy mate

RE: spectators areas in the UK airports.
At Manchester, you can go to the Airport Hotel on Ringway road. This is right at the end of the runway (about 25 yards) although photography is hampered by the fencing. You could also go to the other end which is signposted when you come to the roundabout near the terminals. Follow the signs which route you towards a pub called the ‘Romper’. You will go on a road around the back of the cargo centre and there it is. I would suggest though that the best place for photography now, is the top of the old T1 car park. I think that they have changed the terminal numbers round but it’s the one where you go up the big ramp next to the Hilton Hotel. Hope this has been of help mate.
Paul.
