Spelling

Well, watching the latest discussions on this board, I noticed some people here don’t give a damn anymore about correct spelling. For non-native English speakers like me, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to read this. Especially the Americans, but also others (sorry Plawolf :)) created some kind of written pidgin-English. (u r instead of you are). For me, being on this board is a way to improve my English, but if everyone starts typing like this, it will only make it worse.

So, please take notice of it.

Here are a couple of other place names for you to try the pronunciation of:

Mousehole (Cornwall)

Leominster (Worcs)

Wonder if that’s a good tip for playing Scrabble?

Lay out your tiles and just keep changing the first and last letters around until you see a word?

It shows why all capital letters is so rude… it has no word shape and is therefore harder to read quickly.

Abbreviations are very annoying especially when there is no set standard.

I’d hate to think that did come from Cambridge, they spelt “important” wrong!

Garry,

Someone sent me that the other day and it is obviously true! I had no problem whizzing through it.

But I agree entirely with the quality of writing on the boards. Even people who say “u” instead of “you” irritate me. I never use slang for a variety of reasons. I don’t even use slang in text messages. I’m one of these who types a word out in full! 😀

DazDaMan.

Kirkcaldy, I believe is pronounced Kerkuddy.

As to Ebribgton, well is Moggy asking a bit of a trick question there? For a start off my map says it’s in Gloucestershire but might it be known as something like Charnuth or Charingworth?

And does anyone know where Uchetter is?

Regards,

I’m going out on a limb and saying it’s either ‘Ebington’ or ‘Ebton’??

How about this one: Kirkcaldy

More pronunciation than spelling

It always amuses me when the USAF chappies in this area refer to the town as Cam Bridge (As in camshaft)

Logically though, since it gets its name from being a bridge over the river Cam, they are right and all the rest of us are wrong.

My own favourite is the Worcestershire town of EBRINGTON.

Anybody like to guess how it is pronounced?

Moggy
