Hi Guys,
I visited the Technik Museum in Speyer, Germany last week. Here’s a small selection of what is on offer there. Apart from the planes there are countless cars & a few boats & even a U-boat that you can “walk” through .
I forgot my Camera, so the following photos were taken with my phone 🙁 But to be honest, even if I had had my Camera, my photos wouldn’t be much better …..
If you are visiting Speyer, plan a full day. As you can see, you can enter many of the outside exhibits. You can walk along the Jumbo wing & then come down the stainless steel slide.
& if you are in the local area, Sinsheim is even biger & even better !
Warning – I don’t believe (m)any of the “Aerobatic” planes are what they are painted up to be….
Enjoy !

Not with the Union Jack on the tail and under the cockpit! I’d say the red and blue of the roundel are round the other way for France?

Forget what I wrote. My brain must have been left at home today…

Does anybody know the story behind the WW2 Japanese aircraft cockpit (post #6 under the Ju52) with ‘SEA’ written on it; it was a post-war evaluation airframe and there is (was) a similar (or the same) one in the IWM London.
Rather strangely, it’s an exact replica of the IWM’s Zero cockpit, built just a few years ago. I’ve no idea what it’s made of, but it’s certainly very convincing!

Blimey, German museums definately have a great desire of sticking large aircraft on very tall poles!
On a serious note it must be difficult getting them up there, dangerous in strong winds (especially the 747 at Speyer) and very difficult to clean and maintain?

I’m pretty sure their Alpha Jets were blue ever since taking over from the Magister, also a bit odd to be wearing RAF roundels and Union Jack.
I was wondering if it was a special service scheme to commemorate the Red Arrows in some way, but I didn’t think that one nations armed forces could wear the snational markings of anothers?
A lot of the types in the museum are in genuine special, anniversary, or display team colours, maybe the museum couldn’t get a Reds Hawk and decided to paint the Alpha up to represent them?

Isn’t it the original PdF colour scheme?

It looks an absolutely fascinating place.
That U-boat must be the furthest from the sea that a full-size submarine has ever got!

BenyBoy – Here’s a link to the Museum at Sinsheim =>http://sinsheim.technik-museum.de/en/aircraft
If anything it’s even bigger than the Speyer Museum & as mentioned above there are both a Concorde & Tu144 there. You can get inside both ( as well as inside a JU-52 & others 🙂 )
Sinsheim also has a massive collection of Tanks, F1 cars, Trains Motorbikes etc etc etc. I’ve been to Sinsheim a few times & to be honest even a day isn’t long enough.
Pagen01 – The U-boat – Sorry I didn’t take any pics of it, but you can see it in the background behind the Gannet. & it’s featured in the website link you posted
Fouga23 – I’ll send you an E-mail with what I have, but be warned, I’m not a good photographer.
Creaking Door – The sign hanging off the Alphajet says … “First flight 1973. 500 examples built. Used in France, Germany & other countries” … so no help there I’m afraid.
By pure chance my son has been invited to a birthday party “trip” to Speyer on Saturday. His second visit in 10 days…. He’s not complaining !

Thank you Jetflap. I was getting confused, thinking there should be a Concordski and that the 747 was at more of an angle.
Now I have two places to visit.

What is the other place you mentioned ?
Ben
Sinsheim was the other place Steve mentioned. I went there in 1987 and it was well worth the visit. Many of the exhibits have since gone to Speyer but it has now got many additional ones of its own, including a Concorde and a Tu144!

Wonderful, thanks for posting. It looks an amazing place, could lose myself for hours/weeks there I’m sure.

I love the way they have done the outside aircraft displays…………………But how the H### did they get a 747 up that high?????
Answers on a post card- very impressed

Like many other aircraft it is painted in fictitious markings.
Are they? Or are they mostly in display team, and special anniversary markings etc – most look familiar.
Worth visiting there website, http://speyer.technik-museum.de/en/aircraft some good pics of the aircraft being moved to the site etc.

Fantastic collection – a place on my “wish list” to visit.

If I remember correctly it’s a prototype. Like many other aircraft it is painted in fictitious markings.

Working for me now, thanks! The F4’s and F101 look really good, I imagine the F15 is next for a repaint? The mounting of the Gannet is a bit odd compared to other aircraft?
By: pagen01 - 7th June 2010 at 13:51
It has to said that the Germans certainly think ‘outside the box’ when it comes to displays!
Where else can you see a Potez-Heinkel 191, fire engine and Trabant in the same shot!
Thanks for sharing Steve, did you get any shots of the U Boat?.
By: Fouga23 - 7th June 2010 at 13:50
Nice! Do you have high-res versions of the CM191 pictures?
By: stevew62 - 7th June 2010 at 13:49
And the last few ….

See the little boy in the green sweatshirt, pointing his finger, in the last few shots. That’s my son & it really IS that interesting for kids.
