Did anyone see his interview within the top 100 war movies? He said that the P51 flying in the movie was done by the Red Arrows? a little confused I think

The great thing about “Empire of the Sun” is the boy’s absolute devotion to “aviation”! I certainly see a lot of myself in him. “P-51’s! Cadillacs of the Sky!” 😉

empire region 2
there is talk of a special edition coming out next year on region 1 & 2 and as the star is also the new batman this may light a fire under them, it is a great film and the aviation referances a many like the crashed zero or the B29 tail hopefully the talk is true, great film.

A certain John ‘Jeff’ Hawke was aerial co-ordinator.
I quote a few words from the late great Mark Hanna for your delectation:
“…The next trial was Ray’s remaining bomb. This, we had decided, would be from a level skip-bomb attack, with the release height 25 to 30 feet, a-la-Venom Pilot Attack Instructors Course of 1956 I believe. The result was the bomb skipping once, bouncing to about 10 feet and then streight through the target. Having explained to the film people that skip-bombing was an approved World War II tactic they eagerly took up the suggestion that we could place bombs right through the front doors of any target the chose – with the mock Japanese hangars being the preferred targets!”
…
“I am told that Stephen Speilberg thought the flying sequences were fantastic. Personally, having seen the rushes, I think they are very exciting, and if you like the idea of P-51s blowing up dust and taking the washing off clothes lines then this film could be for you.”
Much missed. 🙁

DVD
Trust me to trust my local HMV shop…..
Thanks for the heads-up, I’ll order it straight away. I know a 10 year old boy who would love it ( and a 52 year old….)
All the best

If you really want to know…
…an excellent feature in an early issue of Warbirds Worldwide. Bit with Mark H acting like a kid when they were told they had to use bombs – ‘Can we? Great…!’ style of thing. Some good pics too.
~blink~
Just bin & checked. WW Issue 2. “Skip Bombing P-51s in ‘Empire of the Sun'” by Mark Hanna. Mmmm. Photo of “Mark Hanna, his father Ray Hanna, engineer Paul Mercer, Hoof Proudfoot and son Lee…”
There’s also a feature on Sea Furies, Flying the Buchon by Walter Eichorn, and a Buchon roundup. Looks like you’ll have to get one Daz. Sorry, I’ve no spares. Oh, and there’s a pic or two by our own MikeJ. Everyone looks so young! 😀
