I’m trying to find any information on the Spitfire MK1X windscreen. I need to try and source a replica or the plans to have one built. The item is required for a full size MK1X replica.
I seem to be able to find details re MKV windscreens but not MK1X.
I understand MKV were considerably different as the armoured glass was externally mounted. Is there anyone out there who has done a MK1X replica who can help.
Many thanks

I hate it when that happens.

Cant believe you still need one Peter!!! How many must you have had over the years!!!
How many…over forty years…probably about six or seven. They got fitted or traded for wanted parts on various projects.
On got borrowed for a pattern and mysteriously lost. 😡

Tonight I spoke on the phone with the guy who originaly sold all the windscreen parts to my friend and he still has some new manufactured and some original pattern parts left, including a unused draught excluder which I believe fits over the T section,
Thanks for that. PM sent to you.

The outer part of the rear hoop is fairly easily made if you have access to a joggling tool, (it is just a joggle) the inner “T” section would have been dural orginally, but for a non flyer you can use a commercial “T” section and mill down the “upright” to the drg spec.
Forming is again fairly easy if you warm it up, and use the front edge of the canopy as a guide, the tricky bit is the shaping of the top section of the (inverted) “T” which has a curve formed on the aft facing edge,(best of luck with that!) ideally the whole assy should be jig assembled as the length of the hoop is critical, and if wrong will meet the canopy at the wrong angle.

I am looking to replace the partial and battered rear hoop of the windscreen (internal armour type) for PK519.
Is anybody sourcing the ‘T’ section and forming these?
I have yet to locate the capping hoop that fits over the ‘T’ section.

Couple of pics of the one I assisted with a few months ago, the cheeks are the hardest parts to make as Qldspitty has mentioned already, the bullet proof glass is very easy to obtain from the original supplier.
Though the MkVa and Vb was external windscreen the Mk Vc was the first to have the internal windscreen fitted on the production line, the first fitted was on the Mk 111 as an experiment.

The windscreen casting is the hardest part. The rest is straight forward sheetmetal, except for the cheekplates..White mans magic 🙂

check the photos from cockpitfest – and Rocketeers Mk1 slice…
I have made the internal armoured windscreen on a later version spitfire quarter section. It was relatively straightforward.
