Spirit Airlines to replace all MD80s with A319/A321s

http://www.freep.com/money/business/spirit19_20040319.htm

Some quotes from the article:

Spirit Airlines said it will place an order today for 35 jets from Airbus Industrie for about $2 billion with an option to buy 60 more. The total deal is valued at about $5 billion.

The 124-passenger Airbus A319 and 220-passenger A321 would replace Spirit’s entire fleet of 32 Boeing 150-passenger MD-80s.

Spirit will buy an equal number of A319 and A321 planes, spokeswoman Laura Bennett said. The first plane is expected to arrive in March 2005 with the remaining spread through the next five years.

1) Go to jetphotos.net, airliners.net, planepictures.net etc
2) Pick a mostly white plane
3) Remove any markings still on the plane. Name, logo, the whole shebang. Make the plane completely white. Just use MS-Paint or another photo editor.
4) Save the file.

5) Go to jetphotos.net, airliners.net, planepictures.net etc
6) Pick the livery you want to paste onto the white plane you created earlier. Make sure the plane is at roughly the same angle as the white plane you made.

7) Open a reasonably advanced photoeditor. Paint Shop Pro, Photoshop etc.
8) Open the plane with the livery you want to copy.
9) Copy the part(s) of the livery you need to copy.
10) Paste the livery parts as a new layer into the white plane.
11) If necessary rotate and/or resize.

12) If necessary repeat step 9 to 12. For instance once for the fuselage, once for the tail, once for the winglets.

13) Open the back-up version of the white plane.
14) Copy the windows of the fuselage.
15) Paste as new layer in the modified photo. Because earlier you pasted the livery of another plane over the fuselage, you will likely have lost some windows.

16) Save file.
17) Upload.
18) start gloathing. 😀

Any photo of a (mostly) white plane will do really. I mostly use planes from Air France with the titles and tail painted out.

Also, sometimes it may be easier to use a plane with a different colour. If you want to make a hapag Lloyd express plane you are better of starting with a completely yellow plane.

Does the photo you start with have to be a photo that you have taken. If not how then do you get it so that it is white??? do you put it into paint or something

I start by finding a plane I can convert. This time I used an Air France A319. Often I use Air France planes as they are white (officially) and thus do not require a lot of work to convert.

I remove all the AF markings on the plane and look for picture of a Spirit plane at roughly the same angle. When I have found a picture I can use I copy the parts of their livery.

These copied parts are transferred to the AF plane. I rotated them slightly and resized them to fit the plane. When that was done I made the colours blend in a bit better. Because I had to resize the livery they had gone somewhat vague. I just overpainted the blue squares with the same shade of blue. At the same time I pasted over the windows that came with the piece cut out of the Spirit plane.

The last step was to copy the windows from the original AF photo and paste them into the Spirit A319. That’s all. Took me roughly 3 hours.

it does not cost anything but time (though a decent photo editing program does help)

it took me 3 hours to make that

I have to admit WD that you are a great mathematician 🙂
