Spit 5b supercharger

Was the Spit 5b Merlin fitted with the Hooker two stage supercharger?

The Hooker redesigned supercharger was introduced, as you said, on the two-speed Merlin XX, but also on the single-speed Merlin 45, so the answer is partially yes, the Vb did have the Hooker supercharger.

Two-stage was a later development altogether.

Cheers Eddie. To clarify – the XX intoduced two-speed, single stage.

Red’s question was about two-stage supercharging.

That was introduced on the 60 series – Spit Mk VII, VIII and IX (but not in that order ;))

No worries – sort of thing that one thinks one knows until someone actually asks you. I get that a lot.

Quick check shows it was the Merlin 60 series onwards that carried the two-speed, two-stage supercharger

Two speed, not two stage.

Thats beer, no it was not a trick question, I was completely unsure and someone asked me, I said I thought it was the XX but could have been wrong, thanks for the heads up.

hehe – is this a trick question?

I feel like Alan Davis.. but..

No. The two-stage supercharger was the key improvement over the Vb enjoyed by the Spitfire Mks IX and VIII

(Cue claxon) 😮
