Please explain.

The text describes the Spit as a MkVB – but the painting shows a VC wing….

Jan Zumbach was born in Warsaw but his father was Swiss. He joined the Polish Air Force concealing his non-Polish nationality. After the war he adopted his Swiss nationality and the British gave him three days to leave. His subsequent career as a smuggler and mercenary in Africa was something of an embarrassment to his former comrades. He eventually settled in Paris where he published is biography “Mister Brown” his alias as a mercenary. He died on 3rd January 1986 under mysterious circumstances.

As that the same guy who flew for the Biafrans during the Nigerian civil war?
(with DH104, AT6 and A-26…)

If it’s EN951, then the artist has got his wings mixed up…

Please explain.

Sorry I cannot tell you who the artist is. It is interesting that the view is of the starboard side as most would choose the port that featured Donald Duck. My guess is that the Spitfire is EN951, the last of three that Zumbach flew that featured a Donald. Only BM144 was based at Northolt. In August 1942 303 Squadron moved to Kirton-in Lindsey where BM144 was replaced by EP594. In late September it was replaced with EN951 which came from 133 Squadron where it was flown by another famous ace Don Blakeslee. On 1st December Zumbach’s tour ended and the Spitfire was passed to S/Ldr Bienkowski. In June 1943 it arrived at 315 (Polish) Squadron recoded PK-D but didn’t stay long, being transferred to 19 Squadron on the 20th. As this was the only Spitfire of the three to feature the tiny serial number it must be the one in the painting.

Thanks for the reply
