Spitefull/Seafang parts?

Just wondering if any Spiteful/seafang, parts / sections survive?

Another previous discussion from the good old WW Forum days if I recall correctly – presumably the first thing to do would be to find a spare pair of Attacker wings somewhere in Pakistan. The tail is pure late series Spitfire and IIRC the fuselage is little more than a late series low back Spitfire with a raised cockpit area.

I don’t think there is any information on the subsequent fate of the Pakistani Attackers, although it would be nice to see some in service [ not the usual ones where they have just been delivered] Also its impossible to tell weather their wings were folding but fixed shut or built non-folding from the start.
As for the Spiteful fuselage it appears that the wing spar mountings were further back from frame 5 [as in the spitfire] but I haven’t found a good view to absolutely confirm this.

However this piece of datum is made of far thicker material than a standard late mark spitfire datum longeron and clearly stamped 371 and looks a slightly different shape as well, Regards

Jay

The late Mk 20/40 series Spitfires/Seafires reduced the guage of the datum longerons but upped the material specification to a stainless steel from aluminium alloy.

May I ask the material of the Spiteful/Seafang longerons?

Yes I can understand that VS did not change the part number just to use it on another mark of aircraft..using the old saying “if it aint broke then dont fix it”
However this piece of datum is made of far thicker material than a standard late mark spitfire datum longeron and clearly stamped 371 and looks a slightly different shape as well, so may have come from one of the few Spitefuls built and was broken up soon afterwards,as the oxy torch marking is very clear but would have been nice to tie it to a particular aircraft.

Any idea of where these Spitefuls were broken up?

Regards

Doubt it came from NN660…..there are 371 stamps on my canopy iirc. VS were very good at reusing parts developed for earlier members of the Spitfire family in later variants.
From NN660, we have at least 7 different parts ‘recycled’ from previous Mks of Spit.
So although 371 was first used on NN660, chances are parts also on later spiteful/seafangs.
Further, NN660 was well spanked. That said they did remove quite alot of surface wreckage.

Anybody have any idea where the Spitefuls were broken up? and if the piece of datum longeron came from NN660?

The metal rod is just there to stop it getting further damage only.

I get there in the end!!!

Thanks for the Pics Tony, A picture tells a thousand stories, Something I never noticed on all the pictures of Spitefuls I have looked at is that the rear of the Canopy has no lower metal cladding. On looking at the pictures again I can now see it! A very unusual set up and quite flexible? Is that rod from one side to the other original? if so there must have been a slot from one side of the fuselage to the other?!?

Graham.

It would be nice if it was in better condition. When I bought it (with a spit windscreen) I almost decided to leave it behind!!
