Tony

RE: Smoking of inhibitor

Interesting you mention the other MK16, as this aircraft appeared in a lot of warfilms prior to being aqquired by TFC. It was sectioned and stored at one of the film studios – being used for cockpit shots. Considering the ammount of recent discussions on Angels one 5…

RE: Smoking of inhibitor

As you chaps correctly noted, the spit is ML417, photographed at PPS at Booker just before her first flight (the photo I labelled years ago as 1982, but that may be a little wrong). I have a nother photo of TB683 the hi back XVI that Stephen Grey bought from Southend, got PPS to start the rebuild then sold on to the AFC. My photo shows it way before restoration started. I thought that ML417 would always stay in the UK (or rather, hoped!). It is a pity, but then again, Mr Grey has lots more luvvlies to play with.

The smoky Spitfire was ML407, Nick was a gentleman.

RE: Spitfire 1 Boo Hoo

As Far as I know the only Chipmunk that Historic Flying ever owned was G-BDIM (The blue one), but this was destroyed when the P-38 crashed at Duxford.

The Aircraft Restoration Company are the people who converted all the ex-military Chipmunks to civil use….

Smoking of inhibitor

I´ve seen one such picture taken by Jeremy Flack and it´s included in “SPITFIRE A Living Legend”.
The picture shows the late Nick Grace starting the Merlin 66 of ML407 / G-LFIX for the first time.

RE: Spitfire 1 Boo Hoo

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 11-02-02 AT 04:57 PM (GMT)]Steve…if she was in the north east side of Hanger 2 then she is more than likely to be operated by the Aircraft Restoration Company…with the exception of the Blenheim which lives in Hanger 4 when she’s “not out on ops”, the airworthy aircraft operated by ARCO live in Hanger 2 north east when not in the blister sheds for maintenance…

As for ownership, that I am uncertain of…she may belong to Historic Flying Limited as I believe they bought and restored several Chipmunks when the RAF took them out of service…but I’ll see what I can find out 🙂

RE: Spitfire 1 Boo Hoo

Spitfire 1 was a typing mistake I guess?

Which was the Spit restored at the same time that the only way to get the inhibitor out of the engine was to blast it out? Theres a very smoky picture floating around.

RE: Spitfire 1 Boo Hoo

Yes, she’s a nice one. For me though, Mk IX’s are just at the limit of still being ‘Spitfire-shaped’, the later marks just don’t really look right. BM597 (HAC’s MkV) and EP120 (TFC’s V) are my favourite Spitfires, both gorgeous pieces of machinery. My ex never did overcome her feelings of jealousy… 🙂

Ashley, talking of Hangar 2, I saw Chipmunk WB569 in the north side a few months ago, and a check in my (very) old Air Cadet logbook shows that she was responsible for my first ever flight back in nineteen-mumble-mumble. Is she still airworthy, and if so who’s she owned by?

RE: Spitfire 1 Boo Hoo

I agree Steve…that certainly looks like ML417…one of my other favourite Spits…I shall miss seeing her in Hanger 2 and gracing the skies of Duxford…it was such a fantastic sight to watch her take to the skies for the first time in 2 years last year…

RE: Spitfire 1 Boo Hoo

Bit of a long shot this, but is it ML417, now ex-TFC? (Hence ‘boo-hoo’)

RE: Spitfire 1 Boo Hoo

If you look carefully under the port wing, I believe you can read… G-BJSG. So, I think the photograph was taken at PPS between 1980 and 1984.

Benjamin.
