Spitfire 1a X4009

Hi All,

An update on the pending restoration of Spitfire 1a – X4009 (Yes I know more Spit Resto news!). courtesy of :- https://www.facebook.com/WarbirdsOnline/  (For 1st info of project scroll down Facebook page to Aug 2022)

Supermarine Spitfire Mk Ia X4009 is on its way to Australia. The Spitfire arrived at the Port of Felixstowe UK and was loaded onto the container ship MSC Allegra, on the 29th of July 2023 and is scheduled to arrive in Australia on 9 September, 2 days after the death of Pat Hughes in 1940. Following customs clearance, it will be transported to Scone NSW and unpacked immediately upon arrival. The arrival of the Spitfire wreck is much anticipated and has been a long and complex project to complete.

Following the arrival of Spitfire X4009,the aircraft will be placed on display in a suitable cabinet at Hunter Warbirds – Scone NSW befitting the contribution that Flight Lieutenant Paterson Clarence Hughes made as Australia’s highest scoring Battle of Britain ace.

At some stage it is hoped to arrange for Pat Hughes relatives, to visit Scone to view his aircraft. Many of the family have contacted us and have expressed their support for the project to restore and rebuild Spitfire X4009.

The Hunter Fighter Collection Board have extended their thanks to Ross Pay and Ann-Maree Pay, Paul Bennet, Richard Grace and his team, and Steve Vizard from Airframe Assemblies for their considerable assistance in making the journey of Pat’s Spitfire to Australia possible.

The restoration and rebuild of The Pat Hughes Spitfire is being funded from many sources, including corporate and public donations. HFC thanks all those who have generously donated so far.
