Spitfire 24 PK683 Solent Sky Museum – cockpit query

I’d still like to know why it was fitted to PK683 and was it common to all Mk 24s or just those to which certain mods had been done?

Anyone? 🙂

My old Seafire 46, basically a Mk 22, had it.

If it was on the Mk 21 than it would be aileron related to the new twenty series wing. If not on the MK 21 but on the MK 22/24 it will almost certainly be related to feed back to the ‘stick’ from the Spiteful tail group.

I came across this splendid photo of the cockpit of PK683 and it causes me to ask the Spitfire experts on the forum what is the purpose of the collar around the spade grip?

I assume it’s a (lead) weight but the illustrations in Volume I for the Spitfire 24 don’t show it. I’ve seen at least one other late Mark Spitfire so fitted, so I’m guessing it’s a common mod?

Can anyone tell me the purpose and how common the mod. actually is (was), e.g. was it only for this Mark or were other versions also fitted with it?
