Spitfire and Hurricane movements

There are plenty of spits to go round and some being exported are pretty natural. Besides theres allways odd ones coming “home” such as the TR9 PT462 or the ex Burmese one.

However…

Hurricanes are different! No one can blame HFL for exporting AE977, but how come UK operators are less inclined to buy Hurricanes, for examples the HAC one very nearly went overseas. I’m suprised the OFMC didnt bid for the Sea Hurricane, or why TFC are tinkering with a wrecked MK4 when a fully flyable one is sitting literally feet away, no doubt a lot cheaper than the cost of restoring one!

Any idea of any Hurricane projects, especially ones to fly?

RE: Hurricane movements

I doubt Steve Milnthorpe ‘gave up’ the restoration is a superb one, particularly when looking at what he started with. Wherever this machine ends up I think Steve can be very proud of his achievement.

RE: Hurricane movements

I guess that ones the MK12 that was a bit behind that AE977?

Any idea as to the future of the MK1 previously owned by Steve Milnthorpe? How come he gave up, or did he simply run out of money?

RE: Hurricane movements

There’s just not enough multi-milionaire aviation enthusiasts to go round in Britain.

They ought to try a bit harder at the hard sell.

RE: Hurricane movements

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 22-11-01 AT 10:41 PM (GMT)]It’s true that G-KAMM should be going to the US, but that’s not the only one underway with Hawkers at present. G-KAMM still has work to be done on her, and will be a real cracker when completed. The workmanship just gets better and better. She was however started prior to being sold to her American owner, having been started around the same time as AE977. Again another aircraft that was widely advertised in the UK.

RE: Hurricane movements

Sorry to dampen your spirits, but the next Hawker Restorations project is also destined for the states.G-KAMM is relatively near to flying again, but her UK registration is for post test flying purposes only, before she departs for America. She was apparently in American ownership even before her restoration began.

RE: Hurricane movements

The new TFC Hurricane is from a conversation I had last week progressing very well, and from the look of her earlier this year will be a very nice example. I was sad too see AE977 go to the states, but she was widely advertised for 3 years prior to being sold it’s not surprising that she went overseas. Roll on the next Hurricane to emerge from Hawker Restorations.
