Spitfire at night

Back towards the end of last year, I came up with an idea to capture the Grace Spitfire in a slightly more unusual pose, by shooting at night. It was quite a steep learning curve on sight, and involved some creative lighting, but the final results were well worth the effort. I have kept these images from public view, until we had the chance to launch the main images at the Grace gathering at Duxford a few weeks ago. The β€œNightfire” image, which appears first below, will be available to buy as a photographic A3 print along with some other images at the Grace Spitfire tent at the Duxford airshows this year. So if you like it, come and but it and help the Spitfire.

Exactly what I was going to say. I cna almost hear the crackle of that exhaust note from here.

Just showed it to one of my colleagues and his remark was “that’s fantastic” so even the not so aviation minded appreciate your efforts.

Darrehn,

Love the close up of the exhausts spitting blue flames – awesome.

Stunning shots Darren, try and use less light next time.
The engine on over run is quite impresive if you can get as well.

That’s absolutely stunning Darren!
I’ve always loved your pictures posted here, had a look at your site as well; (my favourites; the Typhoon bike -what is that thing?-, the flowers, the airship hangars)

And the monochrome is great as well…very much like the experiment.
What would a bit more nightsky livery do to create a atmosphere; like a lit historical hangar, or wintery trees, a silver lined cloud, some moonlight, a snowcovered field at night…just to keep you busy πŸ™‚
Don’t get me wrong; these pics are beautiful the way they are..

Thanks for the feedback on the website. The Typhoon “bike” was 134 (Bedford) Sqn Air Cadets entry into the Red Bull races a few years back. I was CO of the squadron at the time, and did some PR shots for us, as the RAF were sponsoring the project.
