I’m with ‘phil103’ on this one.
If you remove the flat centre section and re-join the two outer halves it looks like a flush-fitting wing drop tank.
Like the one fitted to a Mosquito perhaps ??

PS – A search on ‘Surplus drop tanks’ gives some fascinating results :- http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=Surplus+Drop+Tanks&FORM=RESTAB

Doesn’t look like a Spitfire slipper tank to me – no flat sides.

I’m not expert but reading the article it says tank and other material. Could it have been cut in half and the ‘other material’ added to give it to shape it has?

Several differences.

No, it does not look like a Spitfire slipper tank. It looks like a US 150 gal flat tank often seen being carried under the belly of a P-47.
The March Eduard newsletter has an article on drop tanks and some photographs of nautical crafts and other things made from them. It can be downloaded from here: http://www.eduard.com/info-eduard/
