Hello chaps, my first post to this forum. I am scratch building a Spitfire V cockpit section from factory drawings (frame 5 to 13). What i am missing is some information on the gun sight mount, any ideas or help would be great.
I have a small website detailing the build here,

Thanks

Funhouse – with the sunken stencilling i use ivory (not white- too stark) artists gouache – give it a go – its water based and the base paint which is probably oil based will repell it, but let it dry then wax over the top, gives you lovely crisp lettering in etched letters….
Just a tip thats worked for me….CRACKING work though fella

Due to a few problems which have slowed down things over the last few months, I managed to make a few small items to keep the project moving forward.
So a small update for those interested. The Nose up/Down indicator for the instrument panel is a hard to find item, after receiving some help with information on that i started making one.

The other items are parts for the Tank jettison release.

Latest part to be made for the project is the oxygen bottle cradle. The original item was a casting, the replica frame was cut and machined from two aluminium billets.

TN and Elliott,
thanks for the kind word chaps, though you will have to forgive any inaccuracy. Most of the parts and fittings are made from either photos or a few general assembly drawings, which is not the best way to reproduce something, but better than nothing.
Thanks for the interest,
Dave

Another small project update. Thanks to some better reference material (thank you Damien B) the pilots windscreen is being re worked to look a little more realistic, i have also been waiting for some information on thermal forming polycarbonate sheet, and hope to make the top glazing panel for the windscreen. another part made for the project is the cockpit door catch assembly.

aj march, the project was started May 2004, It would be hard to give a completion time, as there are a few items i will re make now i have better information.

I have a very humble workshop at home, so i can fabricate and machine the parts i need to. The sheet metal side of the project was, and still is a big learning curve for me, as i had no experience of that until i started the build.
Thank you for the kind words and the interest chaps.

Hey, Funhouse, your project and the workmanship are absolutely astounding! I’m with HP 57 – why stop with the cockpit?
One question: I’ve visited your terrific website which illustrates the building of the frames and brackets, but how are the other metal fittings made? For example the spar attach fittings that appear to be machined. Do you have access to a machine shop?
Please show us some of the other construction methods on your website.
Thanks for sharing this amazing project with us!

Funhouse – you sure have a lot of fun in your house!
Your work is fantastic for a non-flying replica.
Suggestions: are you a member of EAA? I am sure they could help you, and more important – you could help others to build flying airplanes, and maybe build your own. you certainly have the two required qualities – talent and perseverance.
Another advice: There are people in the UK building flying Spitfires. I don’t have an address but I am sure it can be found. They may have information you need
Keep up the good work, can’t wait to see the completed cockpit

A small update on the project. The oxygen valve and emergency chassis control have been made, the Co2 bottle for the chassis control still needs to be made to complete the assembly.

Rocketeer,
many thanks for that information sir and the kind words from both yourself and HP57.At the risk of appearing a little cheeky, would it be possible to ask you for the dimension of hole pitch on the straps please.
Thanking you for your time to reply
Dave
