R.I.P. Baz – pity I have only just found this thread as I live a couple of miles from Penmount, and would have gone along to celebrate his life.
I first met Baz when his Spitfire IX was on display in 132 (City of Bombay) Squadron markings in Truro city centre in September 2005 as part of a display to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the end of the war, and it was fully Invasion striped up. Baz kindly let my, then, young daughters up on to the platform and wear helmet, goggles and flying jacket which he kindly loaned them.
The location was on Lemon Quay not far from the site of H.T.P. Motors Ltd, part of the civilian repair organisation, and several photos of Spitfire parts being repaired were on display, and the site is still in use as the local pannier market to this day.
Blue Skies Baz
Allan

Were any forum members able to attend the service this morning?
Sadly, I’m 300 miles away at the moment so I couldn’t be there.

I often chatted with Barry through the perimeter fence at Plymouth airport during his bird scaring days there in the 1990’s. He was always interesting and worth listening to due to his extensive aviation knowledge. He could also be very amusing with many funny anecdotes on various subjects. Our chats took place during my daily 2/3 mile lunchtime exercise walk from my own workplace to the airport and back, and were an enjoyable and welcome break from my normal office routine. On one occasion I recall being very pleasantly surprised to learn that Barry was the artist responsible for some very fine pictures that I’d always admired, hanging in the airport terminal, and some time later I was even more astonished when he casually mentioned that he had a Spitfire in his garden down in Cornwall – not something you hear every day! A quite remarkable and talented character.
I’m so sorry that he’s no longer with us but his memory will certainly remain. Thanks to Dr S and Chris for letting us know.
Regards …Paul

I too learned of Baz’s death through Facebook. I didn’t recognise the name but as I read on, I had a moment of recognition and sadness. I don’t think we ever talked on the forum but I always read and enjoyed his posts about his various projects.
A sad loss not only to this forum but the fraternity as a whole.

Is a sad day when one of us passes. We lose a part of ourselves with it.

A few years back now.
Phone rings, it’s Baz
Baz: You in?
DrS: Yup, sure am, whats on?
Baz: I’m in Newquay, got a cold drink? I’m parched
DrS : Of course
Baz: be there in 10.
He was only out for a joyride towing one of his Spitfires, causing utter chaos in the town 😀 Usually our driveway gets blocked by school run types, but this was a first.
Gonna miss Baz mightily 🙁

Very sad news indeed.
Though I bet whatever there is guarding the pearly gates, he’s on with fettling it already!

Its darkened the day a bit to learn that Baz has gone. The wicked sense of humour and the way a quick chat could turn into a lost three hours (in person or on the phone) will be missed.

Read about his passing on FB earlier today – very sad.
I remember Barry as a bird scarer at St Mawgan back in the 80s… always very friendly and helpful to us spotters – on one occasion when there was a rare P-3 in – can’t remember which one now, but it was a test airframe that had 2 A6 drop tanks under each wing – Barry took our cameras on to the camp and took some pics for us!
When at Laarbruch an ATC colleague told me a story about Barry from his days at St Mawgan – he put a Storno radio into SATCOs briefcase and as he walked out, Barry was on the Storno shouting out “help, let me out of here!!!”
I didn’t realise he was a talented artist until the other day when I was in the antiques arcade in Hungerford and happened across a number of prints drawn by Barry – a lovely Barracuda over RNAS St Merryn.
RIP Barry
