Always enjoy seeing pics of your family and other animals Baz! The last time I was at St Mawgan on proper detachment was back in 2003. Needless to say when someone mentioned your collection a wagon load of lineys paid a visit! Impressive stuff mate.

I did visit St Mawgan again in May 2005 for Maxeval. We got there early in the morning to set up the line for the jets to land after lunch. We were working out of the HAS site and Trelloy (sp?) line. When we got the call that the jets were 20 minutes out and that the last one in was going to take the RHAG, everyone came out to watch. I remember looking towards the 12 end of the runway and seeing a fleet of caravans in one of the farmers fields, obviously enjoying a nice quiet holiday.

Then 12 GR4’s and 8 F3’s rocked up for a party………

The field was empty within hours! Brilliant stuff! The flypast that 2 GR4’s did on departure was awesome. I asked the nav in the lead jet how high they were afterwards, he said that radalt was not in triple digits… The pilot now has two stars…..

I do very much miss St Mawgan…. 🙁

I assume that ‘BT-K’ is the James May “Airfix kit” What is happening with that?

Canberra WD954

Within the next few weeks my cockpit section will start receiving some TLC, building up to it’s respray into the black and grey she wore in the early fifties.

Being an early Canberra she was fitted with a chin mounted pitot head, just behind the bomb aimers position. Is this a generic pitot tube and/or does anyone have a spare?

The canopy is off a T/bird and at some stage I would like to change it back to a B2, again does anyone have one tucked away somewhere?

Does anyone have any good pictures of WD954 when she was doing all that record breaking stuff in her early years?

Any help appreciated

cheers
Baz

XM692, will there be an event there next year as I will bring my Spitfire along if there is?

Barry, yes quite probably.

Since formation in 2003 South West Airfields Heritage Trust have seen an annual & successful growth, with Upotterys first event in 2004, unveiling of a memorial in 2005. And in 2007 succeeded in bringing the runways back to operational condition, culminating in a visit to the event by a C-47 (and again in 2008).

Long term aim is to purchase and preserve a control tower in a similiar vain to what has been achieved at East Kirkby. More details here….

Upottery

As you may have already seen and just to add to……..

We only made it to the show with the exhibition trailer as Dave blew his Landrover up and it was too short notice to hire a second for the event. Just as well really as the sat/nav took us through Upottery itself which, as anyone who knows the area, realise how narrow the roads get!

XM692, will there be an event there next year as I will bring my Spitfire along if there is?

If anyone on the forum are in the Lytham St Annes area on the weekend of the 27th/28th June 09, I’ll be there with the Spitfire and exhibition trailer, helping the town raise money for their war memorial. Make yourself known.

We’ll probably end up in the Pub during the eves like last time!

Finally, the Hurricane is no longer at Spitfire Corner, I drove it up to Delabole yesterday afternoon, where she is now under cover awaiting further restoration.

cheers Baz

To finish our day at Davidstow, the sun came out as we packed up, the drive back to Spitfire Corner was pleasant meandering through the country roads with our ‘Long load’ and our ‘wide load’ until we reached the A30 southbound.

Davids Landrover pulling the exhibition trailer let fly in a spectacular fashion with steam and water which ruined his engine.

We then spent the rest of the evening in a logistical operation recovering trailer and dead Landy.

It’s 07.00 now and I’m trying to decide whether to take a (and which)trailer to Smeathorpe this morning.

I’ll just check the weather…………………

Davidstow

Well, we made it to Davidstow, with both trailers, after negotiating the traffic en-route the Royal Cornwall show at Wadebridge. The moment we turned up – it rained. The rain only eased for the laying of the wreath at 15.00hrs then it continued raining some more. It was a poignant rememberance where Mr David Keast from the Davidstow RAF museum spoke some words over the memorial stone to a gathering of onlookers.

We were reminded that from this and other airfields on this day that many young men were embarked on the most historic invasion in history.

it ended with the words,

They shall grow not old,
as we that are left grow old:

Age shall not weary them,
nor the years condemn

At the going down of the sun
and in the morning

We will remember them.

……………….cheers Baz
