Spitfire decals – MJ730

Can anyone help?

I’m looking to build a model of Spitfire IX MJ730/GZ-? for a friend’s granddad, who actually flew this aircraft at some point during his career.

If they’re not commercially available, would anyone be able to make me up a set? Either 1/72 or 1/48 scale.

If you look at this page http://www.hannants.co.uk/search/index.php?&product_type_id=2677&scale_id=955&manufacturer_id=8274 It should give you a fair idea of what is available. The other thing is just to make sure your spit had this kind and colour of code and then your laughing. You should be able to make it up from whats available. If not there are other ways to do it.

Ie getting someone with a waterslide decal printing expertise to make the actual set for you or getting some film and cut a mask out to paint the codes and serial on.

You could also try Fantasy Printshop. They sell sheets of numbers and letters in RAF style and in various colours.

If you are not happy about applying letraset direct to the model or handpainting straight on to it just buy some clear decal film. You can apply letraset, hand paint or even use ink on the clear decal film. Apply a couple of coats of lacquer to seal it all in and when it is thoroughtly dry cut out and use like a waterslide transfer. Some of the suppliers on Ebay even sell decal film and a suitable spray of lacquer as a complete kit and it doesn’t cost the earth.

Thanks for the suggestions. Might try Martin’s link, or the Freightdogs one for those markings.

although not quite the right style of ? you want, here is a link which includes GZ-? as used on a XVIII, then you’d only have to find serial numbers. MJ730’s ? looks like a number 2 template was used.

Shame you were not asking after MH434. I have one sheet available already and another featuring more of her schemes to be announced to the public at Cockpitfest 2012 😀

I’ve been using redpegasus.com. He’s really good & alot cheaper than I could get them done over here. He also uses Alps which enables him to produce white.

This may help…

I’m not aware of a decal sheet covering MJ730, but you can get very close in 1/72 as Freightdog produce a set that contains a Mk XVIII with almost identical markings. These will give you some of the fiddly bits like the badge beneath the cockpit. As far as I can tell, all you would really need to do would be to change the J to a ?, and make up the serial from either generic serial sets that are available from Hannants, or with Letraset. Fairly easily done.

The decal sheet with the Mk XVIII is available at Hannants with the order code of FSD72002S. It also contains six other RAF post war Asian and East Asian schemes.

Hope this helps!

Steve

This is the Spitfire in question:

As much as I would love to try my hand at customisation of decals, or even hand-painting the codes, I’m much too afraid that I’d make a balls-up of it!

I have the vaguest recollection that I built a 1/72 model many years ago, with hand-painted codes/serial, but of course I no longer have the model, and I doubt my painting skills are any better!
