Spitfire Display Team

Well, this weekend will see the final display of the Brietling Fighters/Frightening Blighters and it’s got me wondering as to what the next warbird display team might be.The obvious choice it seems would be a Spitfire display team-iconic aircraft with wide public appeal, high performance and good manouvrability, and ofcourse there are quite a few airworthy examples about these days.
Taking the idea a step further, what would formation aero’s in a Spit be like?I remember reading something by Mark Hanna in a magazine a few years ago in which he said that it was extremely tricky to fly good formation aero’s in the Spit,he said something like “you’re breaking into a sweat only half way through the first loop just trying to keep station.”
Secondly, which version of Spit would be best? Would you go for the extra brute power of a Griffon Spit or the better handling of the Merlin-powered versions?
I’m dreaming I know, but we can all dream can’t we?

“And running in from your left ladies and gentlemen, the Seiko Spitfires!”

😀

Looks like the same models I photographed way back when. Don’t know who made ’em, but they do give you an idea of what they’d have looked like. Looks like the old KP kit – nice.
Cheers

They’re made by Geoff Trenholme of the IPMS Aerobatic Teams SIG, of which I’m also a member.

I’m delighted to say I have pics of both ‘pure’ Spitfire display teams in my collection. The French one, though in colour features aircraft 72 times smaller than the real thing, I’m afraid. I did post it here some months back (Daz, can you find them, right click, save as,… 😀 Ta!) I’ll try & post the Biggin Hill Spits tomrrow.

thanks for all the great photos, happy memories indeed!
I remember the end of year show at DX last year, i took my sister, a keen horse rider to show her real horse power. Thankfully, she now sees why warbirds are so fantastic after witnessing the brietlings final UK display and the La9 grunt its way down the flightline at light speed!

You don’t know what you’ve got, til it’s gone (hey didnt i start a thread like that a few months ago?! 😉 )

Oh yes! Wonder if “forum power” can persuade HFL to do something similar? 🙂
