The F. 24 was the last in service in this country (okay the last in SE Asia) but none now survive flying. Surely more would have survived in ATC’s and in Scrapheaps until more recently because they arrived last? Am i just being too logical. I would like to see this beast fly, are there any projects?

Olds Cool,
I’m new here, but read your note on you going to Stafford. …. I’m desperately trying to get pics of MK22s and 24s for a couple of RC projects that I’m doing at the moment.
Would you be able to take a load of pics of any you find there??
Pretty please?!
Thanks
Jim

Great photo Martin, thanks for sharing. A bit odd to see a Mk.24 in sand and spinach!

Im going on to Stafford for a week in the summer. Is there much else there apart from the spits. I am looking forward to it. I hope I’ll be able to have a look around. Nobody would happen to know where they are exactly?

Isn’t LA226 at Cottesmore with 1 Sqn (ex-Wittering)? Or have I got my wires crossed?
Steve,
That would be LA255 you are thinking of

Is PM651 the PR19 that was, for a number of years, displayed at Hendon without its rudder (and previously kept immaculate on the gate at Benson)?
Yep, thats the one 🙂

I havent got a copy of wrecks and relics nearby at the moment, but i’m sure the last copy listed something like five or six of various marks in storage listed as in the new restoration building at Cosford (although this may mean one of several locations around the base/museum). If somebody out there has the new edition hot off the press that should clear up how many Spitfires the RAF still has ‘in reserve’. Off the top of my head there may have been a couple of merlin examples and a PR19.
These are the one’s I have in my notes as in store at Cosford,
LA226 (F Mk.21)
PK664 (F Mk.24)
RW393 (LF Mk.XVIe)
SL674 (LF Mk.XVIe)
PM651 (PR Mk.XIX)
Hope this helps 🙂

RW393-the ex Turnhouse gate guardian A-XT, is displayed inside now. If memory serves, its at Manchester Museum Of Science And Industry.
It’s actually Mk.XIV MT847, marked AX-H, that is on display in Manchester and has been there since March 1995 .
RW393 is as far as I’m aware in storage at Cosford along with others (see next post from me)
Hope this helps 🙂

Can we have one flyable Mk 21 Spitfire please?
We can all have dreams can we. Would make a nice formation with a
Tempest II and Sea-Fury with Griffon fitted up front and controprops.
(or a Spiteful, if only we could find some Attacker wings).

Whoops! RW393, not ‘386! 😮
By: DazDaMan - 27th May 2004 at 12:45
RW386 – is this one still in storage? (MkXVI)
By: DazDaMan - 27th May 2004 at 12:36
IIRC they have a small squadron of Spits in storage!

Didn’t the one in Hendon only have about 20 hours flying time before having a small fire that grounded it? Surely the RAF museum could exchange it for something else so it to could be restored to fly again.
