cheers all..as a thanx….this is the lower half…..

Hi Tony, it looks to good to be for a static spit !! It seems that you have left out the reinforcing channels out of the main side channels !!

Hi Tony,
Mackerel is probably down the pub, so I will reply!

We had a close look today.. Mackerel is correct, every other rivet goes through the top-hat. Pitch is about 1.5″, those in between are CSK into the firewall skin. Normal tail on the forward side, not double flush like I guessed last night!

As for the top curved angle, this on the forward face to take the top engine cowl panel. Similar riveting standard to the top-hat but 1″ pitch, those in between CSK on the forward face going right through the sandwich, normal tail on rear face.

Note SP58 Rivet Burrs used under the tails to stop the skins denting in, also under rivet heads in the middle of the skins.

Cheers, Chris..aka Chumpy.

Steve and Chris, whilst you are having a looksy (looksee?!) could you please let me know what I rivet the top thin fuselage (half moon) former to…..?!
The drawings I have seem to suggest it is rivetted to the forward side of the first top half skin so the ‘lip’ goes forward covering the top of the ‘asbestos’ sheet and the forward top half skin…..photos I have of EP120 (Spits and Polished Metal) suggest a little different….cheers!
I am currently using about 5% original Spit fasteners from various aircraft and the rest are wartime stock…

The original asbestos ‘mill board’ as it was called, is about 1/8″ thick, bog-standard hardboard makes a very good ‘non-airworthy’ substitute.

The top-hat stiffener rivets right through the lot, though I think there are a few double flush rivets that hold the sandwich together before the top hat is fitted. These pitched in between the holes in the top-hat.

Chumpy.

HI Chris, I think you will find that every other rivet goes through the whole lot & those that dont are csk on the fwd face of the lower portion of firewall.

Cheers Steve, I was hoping you would see my plea!!
One other question please….the rear of the firewall has a horizontal top hat stiffener that goes between the datums….is it bolted/rivetted thru all the firewall/asbestos sandwich or just rivetted to the aft skin?
I spent today and yesterday assembling the firewall/frame 5….spars are bolted on now and the very expensive spacers are all in place…..
All I need now is to complete assembly, acquire a top engine mount lug (that goes into the datum longeron), the L brackets, skin it, sit all the bits and heyho!

I just need time….it is annoying having 99% of the stuff and not enuff time….busy planning/sorting fasteners for tomorrow nights amusement!!

Hi Tony, when I go to work tomorrow i’ll measure the thickness of the material we use. The new stuff is a substitute for asbestos. Health & safety & all that !!
