Following its latest accident last year, Spitfire FRXVIII SM845 was returned to the UK civil register as G-BUOS again on 5th March. Registered to Propshop (ARCo).

So, will we see it resurrected?I
I don’t image it would be a write off.

I have been wondering since I learned about the mkXVIII having solid spars, how are repairs coped with these or are the wings rebuilt with normal Spitfire type spars? One off extruded spars ,I would have thought would be astronomically expensive.
If anyone knows for certain, I would appreciate their answer. Thanks in advance.

I didn’t realise that the Mk XVIII had solid spars, I understood that they were strengthened but didn’t know that they were solid. Thanks for that.

Interesting question PS.
I think the main cause of such damage to Jacquard’s XIX that crashed on take off a few years ago was the engine torque (the rolling/twisting force) suddenly coming to a stop, as the power being used was quite high at the time!
There seems to be no info yet on what caused poor old SM845 to end up like it did today, but even though it has the solid wing spars as opposed to the nested ones of the earlier marks, I guess if the impact force is enough on the carry through spars on frame 5, then it will still break there.
If I recall correctly, both MK912 & MJ772 lost a wing at the same place in their accidents which were both forced landings, one with the gear down, the other with gear up.
Cheers

The Griffon Spit that upended on take-off in France a few years ago also broke its spar. I wonder if the added weight of the airframe and higher momentum takes more of a toll than the lighter Merlin types.

That’s a shame!
But good to hear that the pilot was only slightly injured.
Another return for repair to AA/HFL perhaps?
Cheers
