BR 600

Hi all, just to let you all know RAF Uxbridge gate guard BR 600 has now been removed.

Don’t panic she isnt going for pots and pans, she is being refurbed from a Mk IX to a Mk I ready to take her new posting at the 11 Gp Command Bunker & Ops Room Museum, here again at RAF Uxbridge.

New Sqn and serial markings are not known at this time but watch this space! Any questions feel free to ask!:D

Unusual as gateguards go this is Spitfire XVI TE184 -G-MXVI – at Royton Air
Training Corps prior to its move in 1967, where it has been since 1952 and
in its then low back config.

No problem ! Interesting that these Seafires survived so late when the FAAM must have only been a breath away of needing one.

as indeed is the fact that they passed on PP972. How times have changed!

Mark – I thought one of the Irish Air Corps Spitfire TR.IX’s was lost in an accident whilst in service over there.

It was indeed, No.160 formerly MK721 crashed on the 15th March 1957,, Cat E2 and Struck off Charge. I did not include this one as it was an ‘in service’ crash. The remains were however at Baldonnel, scattered amongst the Seafires.

When I said all survived, I meant all survived the post service ‘storage’.

Mid ’60s would match the release date for ‘The Blue Max’ (1966) if that was indeed the catalyst for the clear up?

Thanks for that – roughly when did the Seafire scrappings take place?

Mid 1960’s.

I have one shot dated 1968 but I am bit dubious about that.

Didn’t a number of Spitfires/Seafires survive quite late in Eire? I seem to remember photos in AM many years back and a statement that they had been scrapped to clearup/make way for filming, possibly ‘The Blue Max’ ?

The Spitfires all survived, the IAC dual seat fleet.

The Seafires were all chopped, including one that went to Bolton Street College. The latter a tricky one for the ‘provenance police’ as many components, wing section, tail unit etc, from it survived to be …. 🙂

Hi all, the talk of TB382 got my brain turning, according to the BBMF 2008 brochure she along with TE311, the other ex Exhibition Aircraft, was accquired by the flight for spares recovery in 2002. It states ‘dismantled for spares and struck off charge’. Also TE311 used in spares recovery programme, but is now being restored back to flight with the help of the Lincolnshire Lancaster Association. By an article I read possibly on here ‘TB was a bare shell with many missing parts by then. Wonder what happened to the Data Plate!

I am not famliar with the name Perdiswell associated with surviving Spitfires. This website suggests Perdiswell is what I have known as the Worcester ATC location…a different Mk 21 Spitfire – LA198 and it still survives.

You are quite right, Perdiswell is/was the Worcester ATC base, and it was LA198 that was based there.

The Malvern ATC Spit is a different a/c

gate guardians

Hi all, whilst on the subject does anyone know when the name “sylvia k” disappeared from the port cockpit combing skin of TB382 ? Raymond Baxter had the name painted on the side because his wife or girl friend was called sylvia. Was it painted over or removed compleatly? any takers on this !!!
