Its a shame that the Daily Mail didnt get caption right on photo of the guy stood by spit with arms crossed !! That is not Martin Phillips ! Probably pilot Bill Perrin !!
Steve”P”
It is the pilot, Bill Perrins, The grey haired chap leaning over the engine is Pete Dean one of the engineers from The Aerial Museum Filton, where the aircraft was finished to flying condition under the watchfull eye of Chief Engineer John Hart.

Did Ralph Hull do anything on it,because he is a bit of an unsung hero in Spitfire restorations?
Definately not ! Not sure Rolls Royce would agree about unsung hero !!

According to AVCom web site this aircraft had extensive restoration by VMI Engineering. Given that Airframe Assemblies restored the tail planes, fin unit, Fuselage, Port wing & that others did most of the rest then i fail to see how VMI have done an extensive restoration !!!
Steve”P”
The owner of this aircraft has asked me to add to this post that the Starboard wing was refurbished by himself & his team in Devon & that Mark Cole metalforming the engine cowls.

I am now wondering when the earliest noted use of the broad rudder on a Mk.IX would have been?
Should be around February 1944, since that was the date that it was introduced, as “the Mk.XII” rudder, on the VII, VIII, IX & XI.

Shots of RR232/5632 in the SAAF service post WWII show it sporting a broad chord rudder. It may have been upgraded
Yes I guess so – I am now wondering when the earliest noted use of the broad rudder on a Mk.IX would have been?

have a good thread on this. I saw her yesterday on her first flight. If you look at the background in some of the photos the houses are encroaching. Give it a couple of years and where its standing will be someones garden or house.
Filton Airfield? What here? your pulling my plonker me babby!:(

Clearly the idea of early and late rudders needs to be put in context – I am looking at a 6 October roll out shot of an RK serial Spitfire at CBAF – sporting the original rudder shape.

Edit – Yikes yes thats me. It should be made clear that the application of the scheme was a co-operative effort between ourselves and Filton based Dave and Ricky who made a brilliant job of the base camou colours ready for our detailed bits 🙂 Quite a few stencils to apply in the new year – watch this space….

Thanks for the link.
Like others, I’m quite warming to the ‘Factory Fresh’ look.
And did anyone else spot a certain Mark V in the pictures too? 😉
