hi all
I was wondering if their are any Spitfire/Hurricanes flying with the gun ports uncovered as ive heard they give out quite a distinctive noise, but i cannot recall ever having heard or seen any.
Is their any particular reason why they would always be covered up? Apart from drag considerations.

I think some of the E-wing-equipped Spitfires have the .50-cals open, but not sure.
In service, they were covered up to stop the guns freezing and also to stop mud getting into the gun ports and blocking the guns. The cannons also had a protective sheath (rather resembling a large contraceptive!) pulled over them for pretty much the same purpose.
