Listening to R2 this afternoon, the Jeremey Vine show had a Battle of Britain veteran talking about baling out of his Hurricane….Jeremey Vine made it out as though it was a martin baker type of ejection seat etc etc which as far as I know wasnt officially around during WW2…but the veteran explained that once the canopy was off/open once you started to try to get out the airstream outside of the aircraft for want of the offical word, pulled you out, and as long as the tail section didnt get you, you would be fine…..So I thought there was no method of ejection the pilots of that time simply got out…….However a Lady caller read out a few lines from he fathers notes, he too was a BOB veteran, and these notes mentioned an ejection device….Was there such a device on either the spit or the Hurricance, and if so how in basic terms did it work ?

Didn’t the canopy have an emergency release toggle on later marks? Pull it down, and the canopy pops off?
And, while we’re on the subject of ejection seats (or variations thereof), I seem to recall there being a diagram for a proposed “ejection system”, whereby an arm lifted the seat out of the cockpit and fired the pilot over the tailplane. (I swear I’m not making that up!)

I didn’t hear the show, but the lady may have been referring to the ejection on the canopy on either type (Spit or Hurri) and the emergency door on the Hurricane. The later isn’t hinged as per the Spitfire, nor removed for entry, but it an emergency egress system.
