Spitfire I instument panel details

I have a drawing for the instrument panel (30034-123) which I think is for a late Mk 1.

It shows the cutout for the brake gauge and mentions holes “drilled to suit air pressure gauge AHO374”.

Can anyone confirm whether early Spitfires used this type of brake gauge rather than the AHO 4040 which is usually quoted as being the Spitfire type?

I have seen reference to the AHO 4040 in a Spitfire MkI/II parts catalogue, but wonder if the AHO 374 (same as the one used in the Whitley) was used in the Battle of Britain period.

Anyone got the remains of one from a Battle of Britain Spitfire?

Alternatively I could just go down to Hawkinge and have a look at some of their displays, but hopefully someone here will know.

Ok as promised,I suspect it is a late Mk1,as it has been riveted,
and not engraved….Why have they highlighted 300 psi?
The MK1 pilots notes do not mention the pressure gauge capacity.

Thanks for asking after the Demon panel, its coming along, and happily
I have found a very kind person who has a new build panel to spec,
and the deal is nearly done!
But if anyone has details of the various data plates on a Demon panel….
I love to hear from you.
Kind Regards Mike

That’s news to me Mike. Any chance you can post the pic? Also, any chance of a pic of your Hawker biplane panel you were putting together?

Just to add to the confusion…there is a well known photo of
a Mk1 panel, that has an alloy tab riveted at the 2 oclock position,
that has “300 “and an arrow pointing at the gauge!
Was this a common fitting?
Cheers Mike

We were trying to find the mod, Rich thought it was to do with the Wheel size mod, but it didn’t appear to show it, but he said the later higher pressure one wasn’t in the Mk 1

Thanks Tony – as usual 🙂

That’s my theory. No one here seems to know so I might head off to Hawkinge this weekend to take a look.

AHO 4040 was the higher pressure one (120 psi per side) used in the likes of the 14, they were not we believe on the MK 1, the earlier pressures were around 80- 90 psi

Is that what the query is over spacers? Check pms.. There were to different thicknesses of lips on the guage, the thicker one was spaced to allow clearance from the throttle and as far as I know both were used, will ask.
