Spitfire in a garage

Just seen the trail for this evening’s Calendar (Yorkshire/Lincolnshire ITV local news programme) telling of a Spitfire restoration that’s growing too big for the owners garage in Sleaford – intrigued!

Interesting, I hadn’t spotted the previous threads on this before. So it’s been touted round BBC North, Midlands and 3 months later BBC Look East, what next, BBC Cymru in August. I have to say that the comments from both her and the reporter was that it was a restoration to fly, having read the previous threads I find it all a bit strange, is she trying to out do Caroline Grace, ah well, back to trying to fit the Mossie wings on the fuselage in my single garage, well they are plywood after all, best quality from TP, now, how do I get it through the gate for the air test from the cricket field, worried about the trees at the end though, they are a bit close.

Its a full-scale static replica – been covered here some months ago. Graham and I have spoken to her … it will never fly.

Spitfire in a garage

I was just watching the lunchtime edition of BBC Look East when an article appeared about a woman who was restoring a Spitfire in her garage.
The feature was quite vague as usual, however the womans name is Susan Lipscombe-Ridley and she said she was restoring the a/c to flying condition to raise funds for her son’s medical condition. I don’t know where it was or the mark and number of Spitfire, but it looked quite interesting.
Can anyone elaborate on this.

Despite the over-enthusiastic local TV newshound’s comments that this Spitfire “would be fully airworthy” it should be noted that its made from Marine Plywood and Aluminium, there are NO original Spitfire airframe parts in this replica, there are a few Spitfire “gauges”……..otherwise it is all new construction. This is a metal and wood replica of a Spitfire fuselage (no more and no less). When examined closely on the TV it is possible to see slightly wavey, and what looks like creased aluminium skins, all with Dome Head rivets. All a bit like the Barry Gennard replica of K5054 that was made at Luton in the 1970’s.

Daz to see this you need to be quick:

You need to ensure that your PC has Realplayer on it!

Then go to http://www.bbc.co.uk/england/looknorthyorkslincs/

Choose the 1830 -East Yorkshire/Lincolnshire link and then use the slider for 5.29 to 6.55 minutes

The ladies name is Susan Lipscombe-Ridley

Alternatively

Paul

Cheers for the link, Paul. I’ll have to wait until I’m home to try the first one out, though.

Looks full-scale, although from the pic it’s hard to determine. And the article states she’s on about doing kits! 😮

I’m amazed that TT hasn’t jumped in to offer space at the Sywell Museum!

Wow, unusual to see a woman building a plane in their garage. They’re normally the sane ones telling the men they shouldn’t build planes in the garage!

I take it she’s an aircraft engineer then? Good on her, it looks great.

Isn’t P7350 the BBMF Mk II? or am I confused.

Yeah that’s the BBMF’s mark II, it’s based on her, good choice!

Bloody oath!

Was it a scaled-down job then?

And it’s in Sleaford, she wants it moved to larger premises so the tail can be mated and the construction of the wings can start. It is indeed painted as P7350 and the report said it was being built to flyable standard!

Bloody oath!

It was on BBC East Midlands Today as well, when they were showing footage of Spitfires in flight, it started with the HAC Hurricane when she had the white spinner! Even the newsreaders noticed and said so at the end of the piece. Looks like a very good replica I must say
