I have an item from the crash site of a Spitfire Mk1, it is obviously not external skin as it has raised hex head bolts on part of it, securing a raised plate around the edge of an access panel.
We only have a corner of the panel but appears to have been a square panel with rounded corners.
The piece shows brown paint.
I am assuming it is wing internal structure due to the use of the hex heads.
My questions are:
1) would brown paint be found here rather than the expected internal green?
2) are hex head fasteners commonly found on Spit internal structure?
Any ideas on the location of this?
Thanks in advance.

Ian, yes the skin is dimpled rather than countersunk but this is common practice when dealing with a thin skin. I’d normally expect to see that on a thin external skin but then we have the hex bolts which wouldn’t be external??This is what is puzzling me.
No it’s not from eBay, got it as part of a display board from a guy I know, other items on same board had 300 stamps. The name of the pic is purely because I’m rubbish with computers and always upload everything into that same folder!
Mackerel – Steve, yes it’s the same piece I was discussing with Steve Vizard last week! That pic he had was from my phone so I thought with this one being better quality we might get a breakthrough here!

Better pic…..
Hi Mikehaspey , I think I’ve seen this photo before ! Pretty sure Steve Vizard asked me the same question last week !
Steve
ps I didnt know then either !! definately not bolts from an access hole because they are staked. If material was thicker i’d say that it was the perpex light or view hole on the aft end of the tank cover!!

The recessed rivets look very unusual for a Spitfire, and as Mackerel said the interior was either silver or bare metal. Is it from ebay as the photo tag suggests?

A pic showing the hex bolts and brown paint.
The darker section of paint is where last owner varnished some of it!
