There’s a difference between not selling at auction and not selling, as TEXANTOMCAT2 rightly points out. If there were post auction negotiations, I doubt that either the seller or potential buyer(s) would either want or feel compelled to put those into the public domain. I suspect that the public will have to bide its time to see if MH415 has a new owner.

I met Geoffrey a few times he seemed determined to get the 504 in the air- perhaps time or funds caught up with him. I suspect few would have expected to see a price of half a million quid when fees and VAT are taken into account for an civilian project like this- even if the 504 is the most beautiful biplane ever made
would be surprised if a deal wasn’t arranged for the spot twixt the hammer price and reserve over the next day or so for the Spit

I wondered what had happened to that 504, I saw it at Tony Ditheridge’s Audley End years ago, all the component parts were stored in the loft.
I am especially interested in this aircrafts history as we have family connections to a pilot who flew 504’s in Sweden, although not this one, with the P.O.Flygkompani .

£450,000 is a pretty stiff price for an Avro 504, even if it is a type L, a seaplane example, largely original, close to being airworthy and with an impeccable provenance. The buyer must have deep pockets and more than a passing fondness for the type. I wonder who the buyer was, whether he/she/it will continue the project to flight and whether it will remain in the UK?

Ok thanks for the update Paul.

Well, £3.1 million was the final figure.
However, some people in the live comments were suggesting it didn’t sell because it failed to meet the estimated minimum of £3.5 million, and that the auctioneer didn’t say the prized word of ‘Sold’.
There didn’t appear to be a reserve, but I’m sure we’ll soon find out if it did find a new owner.

What was the final hammer price?
By: Bradburger - 9th September 2023 at 19:47
The 504 project went for £450,000.
First bid for 415 was 1.2 million, now at 2.6!
