Shortly after 4PM this evening, JG891 became the latest airworthy Spitfire with John Romain at the controls.
Well done to all involved, in this wonderful looking airframe.

Fantastic looking aircraft, love the look of desert colours and vokes filter.
Is this the first Spit to fly with this nose profile since they were used in wartime?
Pogno
Certainly the only Spitfire to fly with a tropical filter cowling post the BoB film watershed.
Prior to that the most likely candidate is Spitfire MH592/9486 of the Yugoslav Air Force at the Pancevo Airshow in 1951.

Let’s just hope that it’s not ‘stored’ in the same place as the Hermes fin, then. 🙁
No need to hope Mike, it’s an IWM object under the curatorial care of their department of Exhibits and Firearms. I’ve seen it with my own eyes. The Hermes is a DAS airframe and so I assume the tailfin (which I’ve never seen but have read about here) was also part of their purview rather than IWM’s.

Good scoop Darren! Great to see a Spit with tropical filter and in desert camouflage, in view that BBMF’s AB910 is being repainted this winter as Polish 303 Sqn. ‘RF-D’ ‘Donald Duck’.

I’m sure I read over on WIX that Bill Greenwood sometimes uses one with his two-seater, unless I’m mistaken.
Bill Greenwood does occasionally fly with a new fabricated aluminium slipper tank.
I know a gentleman who did a long flight from Aspen to Oshkosh with the tank fitted. He said it was a bit heart stopping when the tank momentarily runs dry and the system is switched back to mains.

Superb restoration by HFL hope she stays in the UK and look forward to seeing her in 2007. ps. Fab photos!
At present there are no plans by the new owner to take this, the Buchon or the Hurricane anywhere except Duxford. I am sure you will be seeing a lot more of these aircraft on the show scene next year, in fact they were out doing some further test flights and currency time today – 2 Buchon flights and 2 in the Spitfire. We are currently working out the new livery for the Hurricane and I’m sure it will be a welcome change to what has been on it in its previous two paint schemes. There will be some excellent shots appearing (I know as I’ve already seen some of them) once Darren has thawed himself out from standing at the fence all afternoon! Some lovely ones of the Spit and Buchon together. Not quite what you expect in November that’s for sure! 🙂

Beautiful as always. I wonder if anyone has ever thought of fabricating a slipper tank for a Spitfire…that really would be a bit different. There must be plans somewhere for one.
Failing that, there’s an intact real one in storage at Duxford.

Well done Darren,
I must get a job nearer to DX!
Does it sound any different with the Vokes Air Filter intake fitted, and does anyone know if JG891 has an original Vokes filter fitted or does it have the typical temperate climate filter fitted beneath the tropical filter cowlings.

Buchon went up and did a little polished display, Spit was a bit energetic I thought.
Great weather for flying at Dux in late afternoon.

Well done all at HFL and thanks for the gen and great piccies Darren.
Slightly of topic but if you’ve been at Duxford today Darren would you know if it was the 109 I saw flying over Comberton about 2.30 this afternoon?

Splendid. Well done chaps.
Oh, and nice photos Darren 🙂
