I was just wondering if anyone knows if there are any Supermarine documents (or from any other official body), of a breakdown of weights for the various marks of Spitfire, and where to look or get hold of them?
I’ve got this data for many of the American WWII Fighters, but have drawn something of a blank with the Spitfire, and indeed the other British fighters!
Of course, the A.P. technical manuals have the tare weights and service loads, courtesy of the loading & CoG Diagrams, but what I would like (and have yet to find in any of my Spitfire books and references) is a detailed breakdown of the airframe and equipment (wings, fuselage, engine etc.) that make up the empty or tare weight of a complete aircraft.
I’d particularly like to see what the armour protection weighed for each mark. (‘Spitfire – The History’ does mention the weight of armour for the Spitfire XIV interestingly).
Cheers
