It’s nice to know that many of the Spitfires sent to their death at Oakey and elsewhere didn’t completely die in vain. The ever frugal Australian Government, in the form of the Department of Aircraft Production, found an extremely economical use for the big lumps of iron and aluminium out the front…..enter the CAC Mustang Mk 23. Some of these surplus engines also eventually found their way into the outboard engine location on their locally produced Lincoln bomber as well ..
….Has there ever been much written or discussed about regarding the fascinating chain of events that led to this very fruitful, if short lived outcome ??

Hi QldSpitty .. I’m reasonably sure the surplus Spifire Merlins were factory fitted at CAC Fishermans Bend Victoria into new build Mustang Mk 23 airframes. The Merlin 66 was an afterfit in some of the Lincolns through their operational life.
