Spitfire mirrors

Neil Medcalf recently posted a photo of Jan Zumbach’s Spitfire VB EN591, and it sported a rather unusual (to me, anyway) rearview mirror. See the image.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen one like that before – I take it this was a field mod, to try and give better coverage to the back?

Also, in the recent (last month’s, I think) Flypast Spitfire section, there is a shot of a USAAF Spit VIII with its mirror mounted INTERNALLY, at the top of the windscreen frame. I can’t think why the pilot would have preferred an internally-fitted mirror, however

Cheers for that, at least I know that it’s fairly historic.

Indeed, funnily enuff one of Hunter cockpits needs a mirror still!

Yes, it is Hawker Hunter, ironically mounts inside the canopy! 🙂

I don’t recognise it as a Spitfire mirror but isn’t H.A. Hawkers?

Regards

Michael

(sorry for the size of the images – I reduced them to half-size, but Photobucket doesn’t seem to want to play ball!)

Would it help to forward the images on to me, and I’ll put them up in the meantime?

Before I put my foot through the computer it could be a good idea, only thing is I need your e-mail address to send attachments.

Copy the IMG code and click on the picture icon in the Key reply form, then paste the link in the box, or between the tags.

I’ve been trying to work this out but am getting absolutely nowhere, it’s one of the least user friendly sites I’ve ever come across, help.

I found the easiest way to get around that problem was to simply register with www.photobucket.com and post the pictures there and link to them here. That way you can carry on adding pics or sub-dividing them into various categories, all in the one spot. And it’s free.

I’ve done that, but how do I get them from there to here, it doesn’t tell you, obviously I’m a bit thick with regard to this.

Hopefully these will appear as it keeps telling me that the pictures are too big for the folder.
Won’t do it, I only have a fairly basic Fuji camera but it says that the file size is too big, I have compressed the pictures but still no joy, I know that this is an old chestnut but what do I do?

Sorry, ended up being diverted from my task yesterday.
I have the mirror with me, problem is the batteries have gone on my camera so I’m having to do some charging before I can publish pictures.
The mirror is about 160mm long and at it’s highest point about 55mm high, the base is flat and the top curved, whether this relates to the curvature of a Spitfire canopy, I don’t know.
There is a bolted bracket on the back with a ball fixing, the back is stamped H.A.20D and there is a serial number which is hard to make out but looks like 8182344.
As soon as I am charged up I will take some piccies, then you can tell me that it’s probably from a Ford Anglia.
However this was in a box full of Spitfire instruments, gun camera and a working gunsight with spare bulbs that was given to me many years ago.

I’m not saying you’re not – I would just rather they went to a better home than mine!

Thats what you were infering, however I’m not into getting bitchy on this site like some do, I forgive you.
I live in an old police station and use the old police store upstairs to keep all my stuff.
I’m a bit of a kleptomaniac and have collected everything, I just love old stuff whatever it is as long as it is interesting, furniture, stamps, football progs, Dinky Toys, Eagle annuals, railwayana, including a massive Hornby Dublo collection, WW2 stuff, I think that I may have the only Hungarian WW2 uniform in the country, brought over to me by madams relatives last year.
However I am about to raid the museum to find this bloody mirror.

What makes you think that I’m not a serious collector, you have no idea of the stuff that I have and I actually did donate a turret gunsight to the Halifax at Elvington.

I’d rather a serious collector/restorer took it off your hands, to be honest 😉

Apparently these curved mirrors were arranged at 10 o’clock, 12 o’clock and 2 o’clock, so I was told by the person that gave them to me just as he was about to be sent off to the first Gulf War.
When I’ve caught up with the threads I will photo the mirror and publish the pictures, missus permitting ( I’m in her bad books today ).

Evenin’ All… way back in the dim and distance past i built a 32nd scale Spit VB … EN591 was one of the colour options in the kit, and interestingly, if memory serves correctly, that long mirror was suplied in the kit as an optional version to build.
Interesting… if slightly off topic 🙂
