Spitfire Mk.IX SM520/G-ILDA

When was the last time that Spitfire Mk.IX SM520/G-ILDA flew, would it have been while still in SAAF service. Also when did this aircraft arrive in the UK.

Thanks for the info Mr A. What were SM520 movements before going to South Africa. All I have is with 33 MU at Lyneham in November 1944 then to SAAF in June 1948.

That is about the sum of it. There was an intermediate moved to 30 MU in Jan 1945 for three months then back to storage at 33MU until 15 May 1948 when it was dispatched to Birkenhead for shipping to South Africa.

Now if only we could crack that SAAF identity.

SM520 arrived in the UK circa 1989. One of several fuselage sections recovered by the SAAF from SA Metals Cape Town and subsequently traded with a UK party.

It is presumed that it last flew with the SAAF in the 1950’s.

As yet no positive tie-up has been made with its SAAF serial 5***.
